confused CPU USAGE

Somewhere I was reading that WCG uses only 60% of the CPU. This was great for my laptop because with other projects I have tried to run on it would cause it to overheat and shut down. Now I see that WCG is using 100% of the CPU and it too is causing the laptop to overheat. Is there anyway that we can set the laptop so it only uses 60%?

If not I'll have to drop WCG from my laptop. In which I would be removing BOINC all together.

Re: CPU USAGE

The throttle isn't available for BOINC yet.

Your best bet is the laptop power management options. Failing that, there are some third party utilities that can be used to keep BOINC in check.

Re: CPU USAGE

TrustedDragon, the CA's are not allowed to advise on unsupported software..... plz have a look at the ThreadMaster successful stories. Yjis software is on the official BOINC's webite add-on list. Got my UD+BOINC throttled to 95% combined on my desktop.

A future version, possibly already 5.60 of BOINC will have it build in. Think to have read, that's about 5 to 6 weeks away.

Re: CPU USAGE

I am not sure how to adjust it from the power management option. I guess I could (after these WU's are done) remove BOINC and download the other program from the WCG.

I'm at a lost as to why the laptop has been able to run for so long with WCG without over heating until just recently.

I hope I don't lose my points during the change over.

Thanks for your help!

Re: CPU USAGE

TrustedDragon :
gee i'm no expert but if you download and use the UDagent software to crunch wcg it comes with the 60% CPU throttle and wcg also has a sliding scale CPU throttle you can download seperately that will allow you to set CPU usage anywhere from 30% to 100% so you can find a happy spot that works appropriately for the machine you have it running on.
here's the wcg help page for CPU info :
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=cpuuse

if i should'nt write this stuff someone please correct me.

Re: CPU USAGE

Sekerob: CAs can recommend what they want. I didn't mention specifics on this occasion because I haven't tried them myself.

TrustedDragon/urban peasant: In general, BOINC is better than the UD agent. It's probably best to go with Sekerob's suggestion.

Re: CPU USAGE

Thnks for clarifying that Didactylos, glad you're still your own man wink

To the others here, on the laptop part, particular if you're travelling or sitting off-line, BOINC is great because it caches work...just go to your BOINC profile at WCG and set the default of 0.1 days to e,g, 2.0 days. BOINC same as UD will pause if you're not connected to 110 / 220 volts to save battery.

With UD agent there's an add on called UD_Monitor that is a bit involved, mostly it creates multiple devices you'd have to register, splitting up the statistics for a single machine, albeit can be done under a single member name.

ciao

Re: CPU USAGE

i'm not sure the original question covers the real issues the poster has: laptop overheating.

one of mine is a laptop running at 100% 24/7 and it has never overheated.

maybe the poster needs to fix something in the laptop before a real crash happens?

Re: CPU USAGE

Halfcard, not all laptops are equal. My last D3LL D800 on juice, would run the fan on max permanently to maintain temp running UD at 95% and that was noisy to say the least. A temp regulated CPU clock would not help, as that would hit system performance......maybe your laptop does?

TrustedDragon, there is the valid question as to why your Laptop is suddenly overheating.......is the fan functioning, if there was an audible one?

Re: CPU USAGE

OK, As far as the over heating is concern it was only overheating when running the S@H project under BOINC. However, I found it didn't overheat when running the WCG under BOINC until about 2 weeks ago when I started getting the za WU's and had trouble with the "to completion" time going up whenever I open the BOINC MANAGER to see if any projects needed to be uploaded. I have to check this because I am on dial-up.

Today, I downloaded the United Devices and let it run on the laptop. However, I need some info as to how to set it up so it knows I'm on dial-up and won't be trying to upload.

Also, does this program default to 60% load for the CPU or do I have to adjust something?

BTW, The fan does work almost all the time and this is a DELL 2200. When not running BOINC it does not over heat (unless it can't find a file and then it gives up and shuts down)!

It more of a pain in the _________. <----- (Fill in your choice of word(s))
