Hello TrustedDragon,
Here is a post explaining how to download the throttle control if you wish to change the default from 60% to something else: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2683#61655 If you are on dialup, make the connection, then double-click on the WCG icon in your Systray to bring it up on screen, click on the arrow at the bottom of the client to minimize it, then bring it up again to watch the transfer. This is called 'forcing the connection'. The UD client will try to connect by itself at intervals, but that will not work if you are offline. I think that another way is to click on one of the commands to connect to the WCG site to look at profile or statistics, but I am not sure, since I am always connected. Lawrence |

I guess I found out the hard way today that UD does not save to disk like BOINC does.
----------------------------------------After 8 hours of work and about 65% done with the current WU my laptop shutdown due to heat. It go well over 90 here today and close to 88 in the house. After restarting the laptop I checked and it started the WU from the beginning. This means that I'm going to have to stop using the laptop for running any WU's until I can be someplace that it can be around the A/C. It seems odd that UD does not write to disk. If the same thing happens on a desktop (like a power failure) you would be sent back to the beginning of the WU. This seems like a waste of time to me! ![]() |

The CPU usage has gone from 60% to 100% and is causing the laptop to over heat. How do I get it to go back to 60%?

Hi TrustedDragon,
The UD client does write chckpoints. Either you ran into a HPF2 bug or something corrupted the checkpoint file. My guess is that you found a bug. Just bring up the throttle control, check the box for throttling, and move the bar down to whatever percentage you like. You might want to download Mother Board Monitor ( http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490 ) to watch the temperature of your CPU. Lawrence |

Hi lawrence, and then of course i'm beating the drum for the italian made Speedfan, which monitors temps, but also is able to throttle the fans...but never tried it on a laptop.

OK, thanks, I just checked again and the WU is now at 97.9% done. I moved the laptop to in front of the A/C unit. I hope it completes it. Problem is I have to move the laptop to a phone jack so my phone cord will reach. I hope it don't cause it to start over again!!!

TrustedDragon, Trust-Me.....just let it finish.....then the CPU use should drop to 10/20% as the UD agent prepares to send the result. If it comes up with the '!', in the systray, minimize it and re-expand and it will try to connect, once you've dialed-up.
----------------------------------------When on battery, i think it will only pause the science, but not the transmission....that you can will find out....if it pauses completely, you will have to move the PSU and a powerplug near the phonejack. Let us know how you fare....if you get a new WU. Can take 10/15 minutes or longer on a modem.....mine takes about 10 to do the whole exersize. If there is a new version it will take longer as the new science software will then also automatically download....can be up to 10mb. ciao

It didn't take long at all for the upload/download of the new WU. I waited until it had started the WU before I disconnected the phone line.
