Cancer project

I personally am glad to see this new project, my father died from cancer in 1967 and i've had a grudge against it since. I hope my computer finds something that will help to knock out this terrible disease, I'm in 100%. smile

Re: Cancer project

Hi BlackAdder1,
We are trying to develop a fast, semi-automated diagnostic test that can differentiate between the many different kinds of breast, head and neck cancers using scanned tissue samples from biopsies. Each different kind of cancer may have special requirements for treatment, so it would be a big help if the doctor could get a quick diagnosis from the lab. Once we have sliced up the tissue into an array of thin sections, we can add different antibodies and stains to each section, which potentially gives the computer an enormous amount of diagnostic data to convert into information - reliable diagnoses.

Re: Cancer project

not to hijack.....

while the hpf2 project is down, i've transferred what i could (due to memory requirments) to hdc. does anyone know if there's a backlog of hdc jobs that would last through the weekend? or until hpf2 is up again?

yes i know it's a duh question, but i won't find out unless i ask! tongue wink biggrin

Not a duh question, because I've been reading something like HDC has only a limited number of workunits available since they have to be prepared manually and this takes up a lot of time. So hopefully someone will provide you (/us) with an answer...

Re: Cancer project

Hi vavega,
Yesterday's results returned were 14,828. Divided by 3, that is 4,976. The early estimate was that we would get about 4,000 units a day from the scanner and we would start the project with several days backlog of work units. So I would not expect us to run low for some days. Just the same, for the long run, it is a good idea to have a backup project selected. Right now that has to be FAAH (on the WCG, at least). In the long run, we'll probably be handing out all the HDC units almost as fast as they come in, then split the remaining grid capacity among the other projects. Because this is practical applied lab science, not theoretical computational chemistry, it makes a lot of sense to give HDC instant feedback on practical lab techniques as they experiment with them.

Re: Cancer project

That's very interesting Lawrence - I hadn't realised we were helping on this project almost in real time as it were. It's almost worth buying some more RAM....

Re: Cancer project

I will probably muddle the picture but here goes.

We are basically running two grids in parallel. The UD grid and the BOINC grid. For the Help Defeat Cancer project we are dividing the available workunits between both grids in proportion to the amount of run time each grid returns. The BOINC grid contributes around 1/6th of the total run time so it is getting 1/6 of the workunits provided by the researchers. Given this distribution we have the following status for workunits on BOINC:

2,687 Workunits have been completed for Help Defeat Cancer on BOINC
2,647 Workunits are currently in process for Help Defeat Cancer on BOINC
11,304 Workunits are currently queued ready to be processed on BOINC

We are currently consuming around 1250 workunits per day on BOINC. The numbers are each about 5 times larger on the UD grid. This means that our current backlog is about 10 days. During this time the researchers are creating more work for us so it will be longer than 10 days before we 'catch up'.

So at the moment we have sufficient work - but I have no doubts that all of you members will do everything in your power to help us catch up to the head start that the researchers have. biggrin
