What happened? A bumper BOINC day yesterday?

I had my best score yesterday in a long time and the grid was back on the right side of a century yesterday on a Saturday

Normally on a weekend I have a couple of pages of pending validations today about 1/2 a page.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Yes, our team, who's name we shall not mention here for fear of stealth poaching accusations, had a bumper daily record over the day's before bumper record of 113k points.

For cause refer to knreed note on the erroneous 4th copy transmission! Effectively, all was cooked before many got to their queued work units.

PS, where i was 4th, i've cancelled them in my cache, as its just a waste i.m.h.o.

Sekerob

My team's output who shall remain nameless bumped up 25% yesterday

From reading knreeds post I would have thought that results would be delayed as we should be waiting for a 4th but it looks like they have come home early thinking

While writing this it has become clear why d oh those 4th WU give more PC's the chance to form the quorum so our Pending Validations don't have to wait so long.

Get ready for a lean week crying

Dave

Yep, my machines brought home 20k points yesterday when they usually average 10k, and the number of WU's pending validation were cut in half. Kind of nice to see but as stated, things will look pretty lean for a few days as things return to normal.

Re: What happened? A bumper BOINC day yesterday?

I checked a few other teams, and I'm seeing a massive blip. One team has a 100% increase. This is a huge impact for a mere validation coincidence forced by extra copies. On the other hand, it's looking like it affected BOINC teams more than UD teams.

Would love an explanation, and confirmation that it isn't an error.

Re: What happened? A bumper BOINC day yesterday?

Half the normal queue is nothing.....what about Zero PV status i presently have, hands down......and also very nice, those that run on 0.1 days queue with hi end machines....am getting on average 5 credits more than i claim per WU for HDC'slove struck

Other than that, knreed post and consequence is completely transparent to me......UD benefitting from this, not so i think:
Extra result sent out for some workunits on BOINC
I made an error executing a script this evening. This has caused a number of workunits to have an extra result prematurely sent out. Due to this error there will be some periodic reports of work not available over the next 24 hours.

Users do not need to do anything - this problem will automatically correct itself.

I sincerely apologize for the error.

BTW the BOINC WU's queued after this event have returned to the normal sets of 3.

Re: What happened? A bumper BOINC day yesterday?

I debated actually mentioning this as a consequence of my error (see post here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=8228).

Here is a recent pure BOINC history for the stats users were credited with:

CPU Results Date
20.6 23023.0 2006-07-30 Sunday (est)
26.6 32359.0 2006-07-29 Saturday
17.5 21022.0 2006-07-28 Friday
17.4 20904.0 2006-07-27 Thursday
17.8 21055.0 2006-07-26 Wednesday
17.8 21149.0 2006-07-25 Tuesday
18.0 21369.0 2006-07-24 Monday
15.7 18971.0 2006-07-23 Sunday
15.0 18169.0 2006-07-22 Saturday
16.9 19550.0 2006-07-21 Friday
15.4 17050.0 2006-07-20 Thursday

As you can see we did in fact get a bump due to the 'extra' results coming back. This bump will show up in team and user stats as well (for those that have BOINC devices).

One of the other stats that we monitor to see if everything is behaving well is the 'backlog' of work that has been returned but has not yet been validated (becuase they were waiting for other results to be returned to form a quorum so that validation can be attempted). At 1:00 UTC on Friday we had 18.7 years of results that were waiting to be validated. At 1:00 UTC on Sunday (about 25 hours after I commited the error) we had a backlog of 9.5 years. As you can see the backlog shrunk by 9 years which is in rough correspondance to the jump in daily stats.

The reason is straightforward. Most of the backlog of results are for workunits which have had 2 results back and they are waiting for the 3 result to be returned. By accidently sending a 4th result out for those workunits, many of them got a 3rd result back earlier then they would have and thus were able to be validated more quickly then they would have otherwise.

There have been many discussions in this forum about the benefit and the consquences of always sending out 4 results initially versus 3 results. The tradeoff is that if we send out 3 results it takes a little more time for validation but about 25% more science gets done. As a result we send out three results and we wait a little longer for validation.

Also - over the next week the backlog will gradually return to its previously level and as a result the daily runtime and results will be a little lower then average. Over the course of a week it should return to normal.

Again - I apologize for the error.

Kevin

Re: What happened? A bumper BOINC day yesterday?

Sorry Kevin when I first posted this thread I didn't look to see if there was any explanation in known issues

But as surmised christmas just came early on account of the statistically normally not absolutely essential 4th WU which keeps the grid lean and mean

No need to apologise you do a grand job juggling our, from those stats above, 21,000 WU's per day just from the BOINC crew shock

It's a rare opportunity we get to say thanks for your endevours so...

Thanks Kevin from me and I'm sure all the crunchers on the WCG applause

Dave
