Anyone know what this means? I have been getting this message for a few days (perhaps since the server went down?), my communication is deferred for 24hrs.
I am running the BOINC manager 5.4.9 on Ubuntu 6.06 AMD64. I don't think that architecture is supported by WCG.

You should have been getting that message ever since you installed a 64 bit operating system. Are you leaving a teeny tiny little detail out?
Platform 'x86_64-pc-linux-gnu' is not supported. Sorry. Use the 32 bit emulation instead. |

My BOINC agent was running fine and had completed a unit after I first installed it, but you are right there is problems with when using 64bit, I should have looked at the Ubuntu forums first,

No, it's simply not supported. WCG is not configured to send you any work, ever.

Yeah, it's depressing, I have two MONGO computers that can't do any crunching.

Well
Im running the latest 64 bit Ubuntu Egdy eft and installed the Boinc x86 client from this website(Boinc from repos does not work) so as long as you get the x86 linux version from wcg it will work ![]() |

...and I was thinkin' of putting a 3HP 2 stroke in my Aston Martin. ![]() </SARCASM> We shouldn't have to emulate a 32-bit PC on linux when re-compiling shouldn't be too tough. 64-Bit OS'es are the future of the industry. Many of us have been using them for 2+ years now in the IBM compatible world for desktops. Seriously, it's not like we are asking for WCG to make clients for: BeOS, Amiga, OS/2, DOS, Sparc Solaris, NetWare, or even Windows x64 Pro! I think you will find that the penetration of 64-bit Linux in the market is deeper than anyone expects. |

Actually, there are quite a few requests for AIX and Solaris - almost as many as want native 64 bit.
But the truth is, 64 bit computing doesn't always give any benefit at all to this kind of heavy duty floating point number crunching. Someone (I forget who) did a fairly detailed analysis of the topic. Anyway, to take full advantage of 64 bit would require a complete rewrite of the science applications, and that's really out of scope for WCG at this time. I'm sure native 64 bit support will be added eventaully, but it really isn't a priority. I'm not sure it's even on the horizon. I'll try and find that analysis I mentioned for you. |

Someone tested it ('spamming' ** many DC projects about 64bit whenever one more niche project goes to provide a science for it) and others confirmed by running 32bit and an optimized for 64bit and the product was 7% improvement!
----------------------------------------** 'spam' word was used by one of the techs on another DC forum. Hashclash, Leiden Classic, Chess960 were brought as case support.
