What is with the short deadlines?

I am getting WUs with deadline that are too short for some of my computers. I run some of my machines only on the weekends and with a deadline of only 3 or 4 days I cannot process these WUs. Are the deadlines going to be extended on this project so it will be equal to the other projects? I would like to continue to run this one as well as the others but cannot if the short deadlines continue.

Re: What is with the short deadlines?

Hello Eric W,
CEP still has very long work units. Better run it only on fast machines unless the work unit size shrinks.

Lawrence,

My problem is not getting the WUs done because of slow machines. The problem I have is that there seems to be only a 3 to 4 day window to get these done. Some of my machines I only run on the weekends. So if on Sunday one gets sent to me and I shut my computer down it will be expired by the time I turn it back on by the next Friday. Most projects give at least a week before the due date.

Re: What is with the short deadlines?

This shouldn't happen. The normal deadline is 20 days. Short deadline tasks are only sent to computers with a fast turn-around time (less than 21 hours) - so if your computer is really off all week, then the average turn-around time will be high.

Has anything happened recently that may affect this computer's history of returning work?

The normal deadline is 20 days.

Sorry Did', the normal deadline has been set to 12 days for several weeks, therefore the short one is only 2.4 days.

Beside that, I am also finding strange that a device working only during weekends could get repair WUs with a short deadline.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: What is with the short deadlines?

So it was. HPF2 is the only project that still has a 20 day deadline.

This could be possible (in theory) when this user has a low cache and always crunches his WU's during the weekend and has on Monday morning an empty cache.
By the system he will then be recognized as a quick returner.

Cheers

Re: What is with the short deadlines?

Well, don't take this as being rude in anyway...but maybe CEP just isn't good to run on that computer(s). Maybe running another project that doesn't have such long WUs would be better. Like Rice...since those last 10 hours no matter what.

Re: What is with the short deadlines?

It is not being rude, it is being realistic: some projects are not good for some devices, whether it be for performance or schedule reasons.
In Eric W's case it seems obvious that CEP should be unselected from the profiles of these devices, at least as long as CEP can distribute WUs lasting more than two days. Unless its normal deadline is changed from the current 12 days to 20 days like HPF2, maybe.

Still there is the case of the repair WUs which can indeed be distributed after a weekend of good crunching as Crystal Pellet said. If it happens Eric should have no hesitation to abort them immediately:
- by doing so this work will be redistributed to somebody else without any more delay
- and aborting a WU should remove this device from the "reliable" pool and it should not receive any other repair work for the rest of the weekend.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: What is with the short deadlines?

Thanks for all the feedback. Just to be clear. I do not have problems getting WUs completed on time if the compters are running. So it is not a slow computer issue. It is just that I turn off 5 computers during the week to save a bit on my electricity bill. Anyway, I guess I will turn CEP back off until the deadlines are equal to the other projects. If the deadline was changed to 12 days like Jim stated I would have no problem getting these done.
