Maybe knreed would be able to filter slow machines out of A-type distribution (e.g. based on their benchmark) but I don't think that such a feature has been implemented currently. In the BOINC server-code there is an option for this, called "hard_app". While normally any computer without currently any work in a project can get assigned a task, even if has no hope of finishing it by the deadline, the "hard_app" will only be sent to computers that can finish it by the deadline. Also, when checking if can finish by deadline, the estimated run-time is automatically increased by 30%, so for an 8-day-deadline-task the max estimated run-time is 6.15 days for a "hard_app". When building the scheduling-server, it would be easy for WCG to example change this to add 100% if so desires, so the cut-off is 4 days instead. Now, if WCG is running resent-enough server-code to use this functionality is another matter, the "hard_app"-functionality was added in July 2008 for the benefit of Astropulse, so it's possible WCG needs to upgrade 1st... ![]() "I make so many mistakes. To answer your forum side speculations, though assuming you have long seen this
----------------------------------------21/03/2010 16:57:28 World Community Grid [sched_op_debug] Server version 601 so yes, WCG has a need to upgrade, and is incredibly aware of this and working on this! Et al, the device criteria were set for A type (and B type) to same as repair jobs: known to return results under 2 days on a regular basis and an error rate of <0.2%. There's no reason to get discriminatory because these jobs actually can run 100hours+. In WCGrid spirit we have the widest possible range of volunteers be able to participate. Pretty much any device with enough memory can meet the 2 days / 0.2% error rate criterion (but each device must have a known history first, so new devices will have to proof themselves first). edit: address of last para.

To answer your forum side speculations, though assuming you have long seen this 21/03/2010 16:57:28 World Community Grid [sched_op_debug] Server version 601 so yes, WCG has a need to upgrade, and is incredibly aware of this and working on this! The problem with the version-number reported by the server is, it's not a well-defined version like the client-versioning, since server-side the same number can be used for many months. Also, while client-side is nicely "tagged" in the source, I've not seen any similar "tag" for the server-side... So, while 601 definitely is old, exactly how old I've no idea on. Also, even WCG is listed as 601, it does contain more resent code, like the GPU-deferral-code. This goes for the whole of the server-code, individual parts can often be upgraded independently, without needing to upgrade everything. The device criteria were set for A type (and B type) to same as repair jobs: known to return results under 2 days on a regular basis and an error rate of <0.2%. No reason to get discriminatory because these jobs actually can run 100hours+. In WCGrid spirit have the widest possible range of volunteers be able to participate. Pretty much any device with enough memory can meet the 2 days / 0.2% error rate criterion. An old P3 can have the neccessary memory to get A-type of work, and can definitely be "reliable" by having been running a bunch of 7-hour Rice-wu's. If this P3 has any hope of meeting the 8-day deadline of A-work is on the other hand much more doubtful, so allowing it to download any A-work would not be a good option, since whatever time the P3 uses on this task is most likely wasted, and it will just slow-down how fast A-tasks is finished, and fast turnaround-time on A-tasks was the whole point of sending only to "reliable" in the 1st. place. BTW, as the table shows, https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...ad,28648_offset,40#270922 roughly 67% of computers isn't reliable, so won't get any A-tasks. All computers can on the other hand get B and C-type of work, and since wast majority of work is C-type, not being eligible for A-type shouldn't really be a big problem. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. As I mentioned before from a note by knreed, what we have at WCG is a highly customized server software set [features we can guess but don't authoritatively know]. Till the official Berkeley version has been merged in [whatever that is], what WCG has to contribute back is as I understand not taken in for the other grids to benefit from. Note the edit to my post before your reply was posted... typing faster... what is and what is not a good idea, think the WCG techs are best placed to judge that.

... the point being whilst 67% is not rated as reliable, it can be gotten for pretty much any device. 1), run it without errors, 2), return results with 48 hours from receipt on a regular basis.

Is it normal at this stage for DDDT2 to get a message saying no WUs are available? I am getting tasks for other projects including rice, but nothing for DDDT2.
