On the bright side each WU should be good for 2000 points each. We can hold of JC from passing us for another day or so... ![]() LOL! Rudi, photobytony and RobSab, there should be a way where our two small teams could merge and even keep our "Identities". I have many solutions. I'm sure our Team Mates would not object at all. I'll let RobSab be the Captain. We could use a different banner or sig that shows the merging of these two Teams. Let's get creative. ![]() And if we cannot do this, that would be too bad. JC what do you have in mind? You can always use my E-mail if you want to discuss off forum. |

The return of the COCONUT Facts. Todays facts are on COCONUT sex
![]() Keep your hair on nelsoc it's not what you think! ![]() 61 COCONUTS are considered beach plants, and it is sometimes assumed that they need beach habitat and salt water to survive. In fact, coconuts are adaptable to many soil types and can be grown inland provided adequate drainage and a ph between 5.0 and 8.0. 62 Although more salt tolerant than most fruit crops, salt is not rquired for growth and salt water will kill trees if inundated for long periods. COCONUTS on beaches actually tap the fresh water lenses that persist above the salty groundwater; these thin reservoirs of fresh water move up and down with the tide, successively watering then aerating the root zone. 63 COCONUTS are naturally confined to beach habitata because they are poor competitors, intolerant of shade and competion and seeds generally do not travel far inland. 64 Seperate male and female flowers are bourne in the same inflorescence, which is a compound spadix arising in the leaf axil. Flowers are off white to gray to yellow and inconspicuous. COCONUTS are polygamomonoecious, having hundreds or thousands of male flowers and a few female flowers in the same inflourescence. They are generally protandrous, meaning that the male flowers release pollen before female flowers become receptive. Flowering occurs continuously, since each leaf axil produces one inflorescence and the new leaves are produced approximately monthly. Female flowers have superior, trilocular ovaries and potentially three ovules. 65 Since COCONUTS are pontandrous, they are believed to be largely cross pollinated. Dwarf cultivars, particularly the popular ornamentals are largely cross pollinated as opposed to the Tall cultivars of commerce which rarely cross pollinate themselves. Since trees are grown from seed and each genetically distinct , cross pollinationdoes not present a problem from a mamagement standpoint. Flowers are nectariferous and attract bees and wind is likely important in pollination as well. Fruit set is about 10-50%, with half of the female flowers dropping due to lack of pollination or fertilisation. About 3-6 fruit per inflorescence develop into mature coconuts. Join us tomorrow for more interesting and thrilling COCONUT facts! ![]() |

Now I know! - its all to do with TALL cultivators of commerce (old saying for expat businessmen) running like mad through the coconut plantations with the dwarf cultivators (old expression for girls out on friday night) to avoid getting stung by necta-furious bees searching for flowers. hahahaha |
