Re: Team SEYCHELLES

More coconut facts fron the coconauts. Today...

The COCONUT in history nerd

46 Spanish and Portuguese explorere were taken by the three little eyes at the base of the COCONUTS inner shell that reminded them of a goblin or grinning face, and named them coco, the word for goblin. Some have translated the word coco to mean monkey face. monkey

47 Early Sanskrit writings reveal that the people of India were using COCONUTS as a staple food and for various everyday needs. In India the coconut palm was known as kalpa vriksha which translates as "tree that gives all that is necessary for living."

48 Published in 1755, Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Lanuage spelled the drupe COCOANUT. Many people thought Johnson had confused the nuts with cacao beans, later called cocoa, when chocolate was introduced into England. Eventually the"a" was left out. Sometimes it was spelled with a hyphen COCO-NUT.

49 COCONUTS made a strong impression on Venetian explorer Marco Polo ( 1254-1324) when he encountered them in Sumatra, India and the Nicobar Islands ( no, one did not fall on his head ), calling them "Pharoah's nut". The reference to the the Egyptian ruler indicated Polo was aware that during the 6th century Arab merchants brought COCONUTS back to Egypt probablly from East Africa where the nuts were flourishing. See exciting fact No. 45.

50 Magellan encountered a host of troubles, mainly scurvey and starvation. A last minute decision to go ashore when they spotted the island of Guam brought them further trouble. Unfriendly natives wearing COCONUT shell masks and shaking COCONUT shell rattles with human bone handles greeted them on the shore, Magellan was able to negotiate and came away with provisions anda good supply of COCONUTS.
BONUS FACT Had it not been for the curiosity of Antonio Pigafetta, a nobleman from Venice who decieded to explore the world as a tourist, Ferdinand Magellan's voyage from Spain in 1519 might have gone unrecorded. Pigafetta boarded one of Magellan's five ships and kept a daily journal of Magellan's effort to find a western route to the Spice Islands. Pigafetta wrote" Coconuts are the fruit of the palm trees..and as we have bread, wine, oil and vinegar, so they get all these things from the said trees....with two of these palm trees a whole family of ten can sustain itself..."

Join the COCONAUTS on their quest to spead the COCONUT through out the galaxy. sad

Re: Team SEYCHELLES

In honour of Rudi - A guide to understanding Canadians Eh! sad

EH pronounced AY (similar but not the same as huh), which is mainly used in the USA. EH is more polite than "huh" but not so polite as the English "pardon"

EH is a useful word that is very important and is the basis of all Canadian language. It is sometimes used with other words, or more usually by itself. The tone or the slight difference in exclamations also changes the meaning.

Eh "What did you say?"
Eh? "What do you think?"
EH? Usually used to end a sentance or just something to say.
Eh!! Excitment as in "WOW!!"
EH!? "what do you mean?"
Eh?? "your joking??"
EH!! "Hello you there..." usually spoken from a distance to the subject.
Eh?! "want a beer?"
Eh! "sure!!"
Eh up! The subject is not Canadian, but comes from Yorkshire, a place in the north of Britian. The "north" is generally defined as an area north of Watford.
Eh? Eh? The usually denotes that the subject is deaf or the batteries in their hearing aid need replacing.
EHHHHHH... usually followed by a thump. The subject has fallen of his bar stool.
Eh! Eh! A redhead has walked into the bar.
Ehhh! A blond has walked into the bar.
Ehhhh!!!! Rudi has walked into a bar.
Eh? with a shrug of the sholders. This is the French Canadian version and is not understood by 99.8% of the population. Use with care and only around the Quebec area.

Some other words you may find useful. Toronto pronounced Trawna, a big place that thinks it's the capital. Newfoundland pronounced noofunland. Two Four a case of beer.
