ive noticed our stats have dropped like a stone today, any ideas why this is.. nearly 200k down on yesterday It looks like the numbers are a bit down for a lot of folks, especially many of our "farmers". With the big holiday here in the US, folks could be aay for the day. If the machines are off, then today is a hit. If the machines stayed on but didn't have connectivity, then we could see a bump tomorrow. It does illustrate a vulnerability we have and why growing our member list is important. |

Yesterday was like any other day for my crunchers. They ran and they had connectivitiy apart from 10cores which were down for an unknown reason (they are back online now). Must be something with WCG. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I just found 16 more cores that have been down for some time. ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by RT at Jul 5, 2011 5:28:12 PM] |

I just found 16 more cores that have been down for some time. ![]() We had a power outage and when it happens i have to restart the Linux boxes to reconnect to WCG Well, we did bounce back a good bit today but nowhere near enough to offset yesterday. As large a shift yesterday was, in reality, we'll never really know exactly what happened, mainly because it was in all likelihood several things that just happened at the same time. It's that time of the year here in the US where the heat of the day builds up enough energy in the atmosphere to kick off the afternoon shower. It can be anything from a light, short rain to thunder, lightning and wind that blows down trees and sets houses on fire. Yesterday was also a major holiday here in the US and, being on a Monday, a lot of folks had a three day weekend. With a four day workweek, many take the whole week off. 9 days off for the "price" of four is hard to resist. I think most folks tend to shut their machines down when they're gone overnight or more, if only out of habit. Besides, not many folks are comfortable with the idea of leaving something on and running at home when they're going to be gone for a while if only because of what COULD happen, even though in most cases it doesn't. It does illustrate my biggest concern for our team. How we're growing. In 2007, we did just over 50 million points. Last year, it was just under 190 million - a four-fold increase in four years. In 2007, it took 145 different members to do those 50 million points. Last year, it took 68. We're great at growing our total production. We're not great at growing the team. The average points per active member is a number that is going up. It SHOULD be going down. Diversity is important for this team. Not just because of what we can learn from each other but also for the steadiness it can give us. When folks in the Northern hemisphere are having to throttle or shut off machines due to the heat of summer, folks in the Southern hemisphere are primed to max out their CPU home heating. There are plenty of other ways a diverse membership is a good thing too. Any team, no matter how great, will lose members over time. Life just happens. You have to add new members if only to offset that. Just imagine what MOT would be like today with 145 active members versus the 50ish we run at now. |
