Suddenly my Boinc Manager is "unable to connect to the core client". Work is still being performed.
----------------------------------------Not sure what changed but it would be nice to snooze the tasks when I need to. Tried re-booting. Tried un-installing and re-installing WG. Version 6.10.58 Any hints on finding a log that will tell me what has happened? Cannot find anything in McAffee that says it is blocking the communications, but I am probably not looking in the right place to find if it is. Since you mention McAffee I gather you're running Windows?
----------------------------------------Might help to know what version and to check the Windows Firewall settings to make sure the manager isn't blocked (it communicates with the client via the loopback interface from memory) ![]() Currently being moderated under false pretences |

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1
I tried disabling the McAfee firewall and that didn't appear to help. |

Is this a dedicated cruncher or used for other tasks? Can you tell us CPU, memory, boinc version, OC'ed? Anything changed/installed prior to the issues? How old is the hard drive?

Hi mjeffrey,
First check in Task Manager [Ctr+Shift+Esc keys] if boinc.exe is running [you may have to hit the "all user processes" button bottom left. If that's not running, then BOINC Manager cant connect. Some later versions are able to initiate the boinc.exe service, if it is installed as "protected application execution", but IIRC 6.10 can't, though you can stop the service with the BM. When BOINC is installed to run as a user application [stops the app when you log out] the BM would initiate the boinc.exe process. --//-- |

Boinc.exe*32 is still running. I keep 7 of 8 CPU/threads running and the client app is still working fine and producing results.
This is my laptop so clients only run when I am on. I assume it is only installed as a user application. The system is only a year old and I can't think of any system changes that occurred other than background updates like McAfee and Windows updates. |

Did see your original statement that work was still being process, and wanted to make sure that it was still the case during the problem resolution process.
OK, this points to a permissions / security issue. Port 31416 over localhost IP 127.0.0.1 must be open in the firewall too for boinc.exe, boinccmd.exe boincmgr.exe boinctray.exe boincscr.exe boincsvcctrl.exe [any of these 5 that can exist depending on client version]. Now I'm also curious if you can read out the progress with the boinccmd tool. BTW if not done already, try the Advanced menu, Select computer, type LOCALHOST in hostname field, leave password blank and OK to check if it is just as mundane as the client password file itself. Just eliminating this angle. --//-- |

Nothing seems to be wrong with the networking/communication sub-system so I uninstalled again, this time deleted the BOINC directories, rebooted and then re-installed.
This time it asked for my account info and now everything seems to be working again. I'll be back if the problem re-occurs. Thank you to all who helped! |

OK, Great. Removing then booting will clear out any memory remnants [for most reliable result], then installing will create the clean slate environment. Your security software will be happy with that. Mine, if I upgrade, it knows the signature has changed, so it asks again for approval and if it's liked to remember the decision.
For now, plz edit the opening post title and insert [RESOLVED], same as my post. Then all see it's done. Crunching On --//-- |
