Diabetes

Is it possible that the Human Proteome Folding Project could lead to a possible cure, and/or better treatment for Diabetes? Thank you

Re: Diabetes

Hi,

Yes it is indeed possible. You can check the posts here which were for the Avian Flu, but apply equally to Diabetes.

Re: Diabetes

I am a Type 2 Diabetes patient and have to take oral medication every day besides controlling Carb in-take and to walk 5 KMs a day. I am happy that some one is predicting cure for Diabetes through the Grid computing approach. But I doubt if they can find a cure at all for diabetes. With all the research on the subject, I feel this condition arises due to (a) no production of insulin from pancreas (b) inadequate insuling being produced from pancreas and (c) the resistance of body cells to the insulin produced. Diabetes is not due to an external virus or bacteria and hence a cure can not be found. If a 'cure' is found, the same will not be allowed to reach people because the pharma companies will lose out. Their strategy will be to get the people used to a daily dose of medicine so that their business is intact.

compaired to all we know about the human body, and all there is to know, we do not know a lot
think big! its possible we might find an actual cure for diabetes.

i'm just trying to keep an open mind

Of course, at some point in the advancement of human technology we will find a full cure for diabetes. So long as research actually continues.

The question is not, will it be possible? The question is, WHEN will it be possible.

Could be a year, ten years, a century, who knows? But one day all human disease will be a thing of the past.

Technology is Incredible.

Re: Diabetes

My Mum has diabetes, so I would like to see this as a project for WCG.

Re: Diabetes

I don't think it's as simple to "cure" diabetes using protein folding from wcg. if i'm right, it's generally accepted that type II diabetes has something do with your insulin receptors, not your insulin or insulin production. The structure of insulin is well known. I don't know about the insulin receptors, but even if wcg finds something out about the insulin receptors, finding a "cure" doesn't seeem to be as simple. What probably happens with type II diabetes is that your cells are so constantly exposed to insulin (too much sugar/ carbohydrates at once?) that they downregulate their insulin receptors. As a result, they're less sensitive to insulin, don't take up as much sugar, and your blood sugar levels go up. You'd have to find some way to coax the cells in your body to upregulate those insulin receptors again, and that doesn't sound quite so easy, since it probably involves several different proteins and currently unknown systems in the cell.

Avian flu is comparatively easier--fold the proteins using rosetta, decide which one you want to target, use autodock to test a bunch of chemicals, and test the potential candidates for effectiveness. For diabetes, we're not even completely sure of the mechanisms involved in it.

Perhaps it's like you said, but doesn't everything comes from DNA and proteins that are made from DNA? I mean, pancreas cells are specialized cells that produce certain kind of chemicals, if something is wrong with proteins which constitutes that cell, it enters all the states you've mentioned. So if my layman thought are correct than it very likely in the near future to find a cure…
