What about someone new to WCG who's recently joined and learns about the existence of teams? Well, they can pick a team to join via the "Find A Team To Join" link on their My Grid page. That means that they can pick a team based on the letter the team name starts with or a word that appears in the team's name. Doesn't really give you a whole lot of information about the team. Okay, you happen to go look into the forums and find the Teams forum. Maybe you can learn a bit more about teams there. Well, you can start going thru each of the team threads. The first ones you'll go thru will likely be the ones with the more recent posts. The teams with the most recent posts aren't necessarily the ones that may best match your interests/needs. What would those interests/needs be? Nothing here has changed the opinion that you simply do not want to join a team. Somebody might as well lock this.

You are right I wouldn't join a team if I were you.
----------------------------------------They are a daft idea set up so that you can make friends from around the globe, pull each other legs, encourage ongoing participation in the World Community Grid by internal and external friendly competition. They keep your PC switched on for that bit longer just because that extra work unit might take you past your buddy. Team members put up team websites which are visited by passers by as they look up things on Google. Team members add links to that site in their blogs which are likewise visited by visitors to their blogs. You can invite your friends to your team. It makes for a convenient way of introducing the subject of number crunching for the good of mankind. You know your team website might even get featured on something like the bbc news website and then hundreds of new number crunchers might join us at the WCG. You know when you put it like this I don't know why I would bother joining a team You would have to be crazy ![]() Dave ![]() |

Whoa nelly! I must admit that I like the "young skywalker" reference although, in all honesty, I'd be quite happy as just an "old yoda"
----------------------------------------![]() Let me try it this way and then leave this dead horse in peace: In another thread, I happened to notice that it was said that, if you had never joined a team since joining the WCG, none of your points had ever been allocated to a team and thus, all of them would get allocated to the first team you joined, not just those you earned after joining that team. Well, that's my situation. I've never joined a team. But it got me thinking and so I started looking. Now I've been with WCG long enough to understand that joining a team does not affect the POINTS you earn (you don't get more). Having participated in forums in other venues, I have experienced the benefits, fun, etc. that are possible along with getting a decent answer to a question. But I was curious to see what teams did what, what set one apart from another, who had done something more that just create a team name. I realized that someone brand new to WCG wouldn't necessarily understand yet these distinctions. The thought was to simply come up with an easy way to compare teams, to see who had done what to go "above and beyond" and maybe end up with a new member having an even better initial experience with WCG and the teams we have here. I mean, I think that the WCG is quite well run. When someone new joins, the more favorable their initial impression is, I'd like to think that improves the odds that they will encourage others to join. Oh well, my apologies for the trouble. May this horse rest in peace. |
