No Checkpoint happening...?

Hello,

I have a problem:
My Start Menu isn't working (Windows 10) and I have to restart my Computer, but I am currently at almost 5 hours of processor time on a Cleam Energy Project WU and haven't reached any checkpoint yet. Is there any way to manually save the progress? I don't want all my progress gone! <- Typo now fixed! smile

Thx for helping, Conrad

Re: No Checkpoint happening...?

Okay, I got a checkpoint! Finally! shock Thought these WU had 6 jobs or something. But why is the first checkpoint at 28%!?

Re: No Checkpoint happening...?

It's quite a while since I don't crunch but probably your WU has eight jobs since the count starts from zero and ends with seven.
Project scientists has explained some time ago that the first job is the longest, the following ones are shorter instead (approximately 1 or 2 h). Moreover IIRC the percentage displayed in the progress bar for WUs of CEP doesn't show how much time of the ETA has already elapsed but shows how much of the allowed computation time (18 hours) has already elapsed. The lenght of WUs varies a lot so you will not always have the first checkpoint happening at 24%: sometimes it happens earlier, sometimes later.

Re: No Checkpoint happening...?

In addition to what Curiosone stated, no, there isn't any way to force a checkpoint.

Re: No Checkpoint happening...?

Hi:

I have a question regarding checkpoints.

Yesterday my PC was working on two WUs with a report date of Jan 17 and the work was over 50% complete. When I turned my PC on this morning, I am back to 0% on each of the WUs I am currently working on.

How do I recognize a checkpoint?

Re: No Checkpoint happening...?

There's various ways to see them, but selecting the running task in BOINC Manager advanced view, then on left hit the properties button [otherwise grey if no task is selected] will open the task info. There you see the time since the last checkpoint. If the time is equal to the time since start, no checkpoint was taken yet, which is well possible since 9 hours of the maximum 18 would show as 50% progress.

Re: No Checkpoint happening...?

This has also been a problem for me and is why I have opted out of doing work on this project for now. All the other projects automatically save their progress whenever my computer shuts down. All the other programs keep running if my computer is inactive enough to go into lock mode. But clean energy project just resets every time. Hope the researchers will either find a way to fix this or break the work down into smaller sections because I have never been actively on my computer for 41 plus hours straight.

The other projects actually have the same issue, its just that they checkpoint a lot more frequently (every few minutes for most). CEP unfortunately has very large work units, and it checkpoints at the end of each subtask, when the checkpoint size is smallest (just the result of that subtask). If it checkpointed more frequently, your hard drive would almost constantly be in use, so there isn't much the researchers can do about it.

If you select "leave applications in memory" then progress won't be reset when the work unit is suspended, and if you hibernate your computer instead of turning it off, the progress should still be saved and the unit won't restart. Hope this helps.

Re: No Checkpoint happening...?

Hi

I have made a earler posting regarding the lack of checkpoints on CEP2 WUs.

I currently have 8 CEP WUs which are 53% complete. Following the instructions from Rob, I checked which ones had checkpoints. Only one did. So when i turn my PC off for the night and boot it up tomorrow morning I am going to lose all of today's work on 7 of 8 WUs. THIS IS NOT GOOD!

I have invested almost 20 years of computer time in this project because I believe in this project. In the past, there was not an issue of losing a days work due to a lack of checkpoints. This leads to duplication of CPU time which means that the project takes longer to produce meanful results. It also leads to crunchers to become frustrated and leave the project.

Does WCG and CEP scientists want this to happen?

No, no one wants CPU time to be wasted and people to leave, and I do hear you. Due to the lack of checkpoints, the long run times, and the big file size, means it gets left out a lot when it should be getting dramatically more resources as I really believe in this project myself as well.

Some people (myself included) have an issue with the glowing power light that happens when the computer is put to sleep/hibernation. I found the best work around is a shirt draped over the button.
