What happens with work units showing as "inconclusive" or "error"?

I could wait and see but curiosity gets me to ask now :)

I have two results sent in and one has a status of "inconclusive" (along with 2 other machines that crunched the same work unit) and one has a status of "error" (only on my machine, as the other 3 are still pending). Is credit still given for these work units?

Re: What happens with work units showing as "inconclusive" or "error"?

teletran,

I have looked up your results that were returned. Your result that shows up being error means that you should not receive credit for it. The system in place will give you credit for the workunit if it comes back successful but is unable to compare with other results returned (labeled Invalid).

As for the inconclusive result, we will have to wait and see what happens. You will get credit for that result no matter what because it came back as successful. I can not tell if the result you sent back isn't comparing to the other results returned or if one of the other machines isn't comparing. From looking at your past results, it would be a good guess to assume that your machine is not the problem and your result will show up Valid.

Hope this helps,
-Uplinger

Re: What happens with work units showing as "inconclusive" or "error"?

There's no way to tell what caused the error then? That was my longest running work unit and I'm curious why it failed.

Otherwise, thank you both for the information :)

If you go to Device Profiles Results Status, go to the entry for that WU and click on the Error status (that's a link), it will pop a window with details in it. You may get some indication of the error there or you can post the contents here and hopefully an admin can identify the error.

Re: What happens with work units showing as "inconclusive" or "error"?

This is the error I got on the long running work unit:

***UNHANDLED EXCEPTION****
Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x7C910E03 write attempt to address 0xC010B33B

ERROR
Exception occurred while running Rosetta:
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2 Build #: 2600

I got another error last night when I added another project to BOINC. The work unit aborted and switched to a work unit from the other project:

***UNHANDLED EXCEPTION****
Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x7C910F29 read attempt to address 0xBF671CD7

That does sound like the BOINC bug that sometimes strikes if you do not choose 'Leave in memory when preempted'. But if you do choose that option, you need a big Virtual Memory file.
