i want to hear some success stories running dual core linux box with 2 wcg instances running

i am interested in a new boz to have dual core and linux with wcg x 2 running, i have not bought anything so am keen to hear of a setup that is simple and easy and works... ie so i can have a idea of what setup to run ( am thinking amd after the alleged jan 23 price drop) ...

i dont want to hear " wcg has x problem on x sysytem, i want to hear success... cheers...

who has the best easiest working setup so i can "clone it - sort of" thanx

i am not finding the threads about this or that problem on some distro setup ( nothing against those who get help here) but rather want suggestions for a working setup from scratch ... cheers

smile Re: i want to hear some success stories running dual core linux box with 2 wcg instances running

I have both a dual core and a 2 cpu computer running WCG with NO PROBLEMS. Occasionally my dual core, while in a windows enviroment, will give me a computation error (THIS IS VERY VERY SELDOM and hasn't happened in quite a while, i think they fixed it) or it could just be because I have it crazy overclocked :) It runs perfectly fine in Fedora too.

The dual CPU computer is on a MINIMAL Debian installation and does nothing BUT WCG. It's one instance of BOINC running 2 seperate computations at once, same with the Dual Core I have.

Re: i want to hear some success stories running dual core linux box with 2 wcg instances running

cool, thanx a bunch, just the kind of thing i am interested in, all the coverdisks ( linux and general computer mags) seem to be i386 versions of linux, rather than the 64bit amd etc one..
:( , hmm your idea of minimal install might be the way to go, which specific install do u have? i can then chase distrowatch etc and hunt it down and d/l from the web to get some disks in preparation for dualy YAY.... so i hope the jan23 price drop is real, seems like about a 10% drop from the unofficial reports, cheers

cool Re: i want to hear some success stories running dual core linux box with 2 wcg instances running

yeah my X2 is on the Fedora 4 x86_64 OS, I used to run it on the i386 and it was fine then too

I just have the NET install of Debian 6.1, I install that with just the basic options, then I add things I need like RCCONF (easy way to make it run as a service), VIM (an editor), LYNX (a text web browser). I update all the security packages, maybe update the compiler (GCC) and things...you know, the basic things that one needs on the box. It's the most simple setup I know of lol because I had to do it to 6 boxes and I have 9 more waiting for me.

Re: i want to hear some success stories running dual core linux box with 2 wcg instances running

ok , at last, my own success story, have waited a year or so till price got below 450$ aussi to buy, then i played around with 386 distors starting with "live" linux distros, did a couple of FAD ( defunct sadly) on a spare hdisk ( saves dual boot stuff for simpletons like me) then saved up pennies than bought amd 3800 dually... put ubuntu on but iso 64 jobby not recognise 2nd core, went to various fourms for clues, this forum and thedczone forum and ubuntu forum)

did this update
sudo apt-get install linux-amd64-k8-smp now have 2 cores crunching yayaya
