What are "points"?

I've found plenty of information on how they're calculated and how you get them, but does anything about my situation change if there are no points accrued at all? Are they an arbitrary reward for rank-based bragging rights? I will continue to allow the program to run for these wonderful causes, but I don't understand the point system or why there even is a point system.

I guess I'm asking... what's the point?

Re: What are "points"?

They are there for people to reach goals, as are the badges. One way points may be helpful though, is to calculate how efficient a device is. If you have an old computer that isn't very efficient, you may be using more electricity than is worth it to keep crunching on the system. Not to say that you can't still use it though.
