What happened to validation?

confused I just checked my stats and something seriously wrong with this picture. I usually have 4-5 pages of "pending validation" BOINC results. All of a sudden I have that number shot up to 13 pages. That is not normal behavior. Is anything going on we should know?

Re: What happened to validation?

Yes its same to all, but only at BOINC, as the UD agent validates immediately. Presently on my 1 machine band i got 4 waiting for validation and 2 inconclusive (This is 2 days worth of 24/7). The oldest pending validation is now 5 days. As of yesterday i see WU's popping into my queue that already have 2 copies processed, the 3rd "overdue" (i guess around 4 days). I suppose this is a function of the balancing act.....anyway, whenever i see this, i suspend the once that have only 0 or 1, which returns me to semi immediate validation, since by the time i get to those 0/1, they have 2 on them. Not exactly desirable i'm sure as eventually, the system is waiting on me thus starts sending a 4th copy elsewhere for crunching.... d oh

I'm sure i'm going to get another invitation for a fishing trip from a certain someone for this....one day i'll take him up. nerd

Re: What happened to validation?

We have started sending out 3 copies of each work unit, rather than 4. knreed announced this on 19 May at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=7206#58775
Workunits are now being distributed that only send out three results at the start. We will be evaluating the effectiveness over the next couple of weeks. I will let everyone know what the new send/recieve ratio per workunit is once we have sufficient data.

On 15 May he said:
For BOINC on average, we send out 4.2 results per workunit. We send out 4 results for each workunit initially and then we send out additional results when errors are returned or when a certain amount of time passes. We get about 3.6 results back for those 4.2 results that we send. The difference between the 4.2 and 3.6 is largely due to results that are never returned. However a small proportion is also to due to various forms of errors.

We are looking at ways to reduce these numbers becuase this would improve our efficiency. We cannot reduce the validation requirement of 3 workunits becuase we need this to ensure that the data is reliable. However, we are looking to see if we can reduce the number of results that we send initially from four to 3 while still being able to validate the workunit within a reasonable timeframe.

It is still confusing to me. I have made other posts in different threads concerning this. I am not a network technician. Maybe you could "dumb" this down for me.

Re: What happened to validation?

Okay: as simply as possible (I shall ignore the hows and whys).

1. There will be a higher number of "pending validation" work units hanging around now.

2. You will still get the same points for the same work.

3. WCG will complete up to 25% more research for the same amount of crunching.

Clear? I hope so ;-) - now I'll have a bash at the "how":

WCG needs 3 matching results before they can say they have a reliable result and award the points for it. Sometimes, copies of the work unit are sent out and don't come back. Previously, extra copies were sent out so there was more chance of getting 3 results back.

Now, only 3 copies are sent. This means if one doesn't come back, there is a delay until another copy can be sent and returned. But there's no wastage!

So, for a minor (I feel very minor; you may disagree) inconvenience, we do a lot more actual research.

Re: What happened to validation?

I just read the dumbed down version post to Old Ned. He stamped his hoof twice and whinnied which means he's got it. He's no seasoned IT recruiter but he's got it wink
