Mining rig with AMD GPUs

I am getting ready for the GPU work units that are being developed. My crunching rig is an ASUS B250 Mining Expert, Intel i5-7600 with Intel® HD Graphics 630, and four AMD Radeon HD 7990 (dual GPU) video cards. I use the onboard Intel video for my monitor.
This is a well-sorted computer that has run various BOINC GPU projects.

I did not expect any GPU work units yet, but I also did not expect to see in the Event Log that there is no work for Intel GPU. It seems logical that there would also be a log entry that no work is available for AMD GPU, because the eight cores of AMD GPUs are listed in the Event Log at start-up.

Thanks for your efforts. I just want to be ready for the Beta tests.

Re: Mining rig with AMD GPUs

Hi,
If it worked well with other BOINC GPU projects, I don't see any significance to the message you saw on the event log. Best wait for the BETA and see if you get work then.

My god. Four 7990's? I'm glad I don't have to pay your power bill!

Re: Mining rig with AMD GPUs

Thank you, Mosqueteiro.

It takes just under 1500 watts when crunching, lazio_vii. It has two OCZ ZX power supplies, a 1250 and a 1000 watt. I have an understanding wife.

Re: Mining rig with AMD GPUs

Vester, check out this thread, your rig can run slightly cheaper.

Re: Mining rig with AMD GPUs

It might be wise to consider the performance of newer cards compared to these old ones. According to userbenchmark, my 2070 is almost 200% faster, TDP only 175 watts, so it is fair to say if you run your old rig 7/24, upgrading it would be a wise choice unless you produce your own electricity or get it really cheap. Here in my country (Hungary) you would break even with a dual 2070 upgrade under half a year. With a 3070 you could get almost the power of all four of your 7990s (cca 3,5) with even more savings.
