applause Well it's about time for GPU work for years of delay.

WCG has promise for years of GPU work but never happen. crying But now I get a BOINC notice that there will be an OpenPandemics - COVID-19 Project which is even better. biggrin

GPU work isn't simple. They've finally gotten close to figuring out how to make it work. And that's great.

Well, I don't think WCG promised anyone any GPU work, but yes, a GPU application for this project is indeed coming. Hopefully next month.

WCG has promise for years of GPU work but never happen.
Please show where WCG has promised GPU work (I have never seen it promised). It isn't WCG that decides if a project uses GPU or not, it's the scientists from the universities/labs that decide and implement that. Now, making chorus with the rest of the crunchers, it is good that the OPN1 project will use GPU and give it an excellent speed boost.

Did they promise you a rose garden too???
I'm ready to pounce. Let's Beta!!!
GPU version of OpenPandemics
Both the research team and World Community Grid tech team are continuing to make progress on porting the software that powers OpenPandemics to GPU.
The researchers are working on performance improvements for an OpenCL version. Meanwhile, World Community Grid has submitted the code for IBM's Open Source review and a security review. We don't currently know exactly when the IBM reviews will be done.

When you click in Help on the top and say GPU for search,
you can see Help Conquer Cancer was a project of WCG with
GPU-work.

GPU work is a plus, but certainly not essential ... even on Folding@home there are 2x more CPUs active on projects .... Moreover, not all projects are compatible with a GPU .... Not to mention the many problems with drivers / OS, older GPUs ... This kind of problem does not exist with CPU only projects.

Re: Well it's about time for GPU work for years of delay.

Help Conquer Cancer finished in 6 months with the OpenCL GPU application vs several more years with CPUs only. The OPN project appears to be huge and we are on track to finish the *first* of multiple targets by October 2021. If we want to finish this project in a reasonable time frame, GPUs are what we need.

Here's a quote from the AutoDock GPU GitHub page:

"Observed speedups of up to 4x (quad-core CPU) and 56x (GPU) over the original serial AutoDock 4.2 (Solis-Wets) on CPU. The Cuda version is currently even faster than the OpenCL version."

What the end result will be, we shall see. But definitely orders of magnitude faster than CPUs alone.

BETA testing will weed out at least a significant portion of bad drivers, old GPUs, other issues, etc.
