does anybody can explain the jump of points from WCG between 28april to 5mai ? the computing time did not jumped at all but the points.
----------------------------------------What happened there ?

Hello my fellow cruncher,
the reason might be the start of crunching on GPU, Graphic card processors. All the best MS |

hm, but why the points are on "normal level" again?
----------------------------------------Are there no more WUs for GPU available? And was the start of GPU computing not some time (weeks) before this visible increasing on points ? The jump was impressive!

On my stats I see jumps in points at times. My idea is that a lot of WUs get stacked waiting to be validated and when they do get validated I see a jump but not a spike like that.
At it's greatest it is about 6x the normal. Without more stats on waiting WUs my theory is hard to evaluate. |

WCG had a stress test of their ability to process GPU WUs. They sent out thousands of WUs per day instead of the trickle that came before. That test ended and now we are back to a trickle of GPU WUs again.

That test ended and now we are back to a trickle of GPU WUs again. Thank you for the explanation! As someone whose rankings were trashed by 50+ people virtually invisible in the stats passing at warp speed, it provides an explanation but doesn't really make sense, unless there are people with Bitcoin mining rigs whose GPUs suddenly got to crunch WCG WUs instead. What GPU rig have you got that gets you to over 7K points per hour and over 3 Terraflops? My 45 days crunching per calendar day come from a single home-built Xeon server that I've upgraded to maximum configuration as second-hand processor prices have dropped. The "missing" 3 days crunching per day are the server performing its other duties, but even if you multiply my hourly points rate by 45 it's only just over 6K points per hour for 24 cores / 48 threads and not even 1/18th of what you're achieving. Boincstats still shows some of these people "expected" to overtake me within a few days, but I expect most won't now. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Sandvika at May 19, 2021 12:04:47 PM] |

I went from >1K points/day to 750K-1.5M points/day during the GPU processing stress test. I am new and not heavy on the hardware knowledge. I have 1 pretty powerful laptop working at 40% CPU load on WUs. But the GPU WUs were grabbing 100% of 2 GPUs on my machine. An OPN job that ran for 2 hrs on CPU finished in 20 minutes or less on GPU.
That test is over, though. the WUs for GPU dropped to a trickle. I show maybe 4 in the last 3 days, if I am even reading the "My Results" correctly. Jim |

I'm only running one RTX3060Ti but I've configured it to run 16 WUs at once which maxes out both the CPU and GPU. When WCG was able to supply enough WUs during the stress test I hit 20M points in a day. Now there few available so I'm only averaging 1.1M points per day. With the CPU alone I was only getting 30K per day so the GPU WUs contain much more science and are way more efficient.

A single modern GPU has tons of "cores" perhaps 1,000 to 10,000, running at around 2 Ghz. Just comparing those kinds of numbers to CPU's shows how a plethora of slower cores can far outperform a few faster x86 cores when using software optimized for it. At least they don't credit the GPU's with runtime for each core, can you imagine? |
