Where is UD device id stored

If I re-install UD, I get a new device id and I end up with stats for one device name spread over several devices with different ids. This annoys me. I've read about saving and restoring the cs.ud file but it doesn't seem to work for me and I discovered it too late.

Questions:

Why can't stats be allocated to devices by name (which I can set) rather than id (which I can't)? After all, it's only my devices that are involved so why can't I control my own namespace?

Where is my device's id stored (UD on Windows)? Why can't I find it with a file system or Registry search?

How can I hack my old device id back into my current configuration (using a hex editor/Perl if necessary) so new points will go to the original device?

Thanks

It's on the todo list.

Please don't edit anything with a hex editor, UD uses encrypted files, so it is unlikely to work.

Re: Where is UD device id stored

Why can't stats be allocated to devices by name (which I can set) rather than id (which I can't)?
We see many messages from people who forgot that they previously assigned a device using another member name. We don't yet have a way to get around member forgetfulness.

Internally, WCG simply assigns a number to each device and goes from there.

It is possible to change the NAME for an UD version device if you want. It only has to be globally unique across all of your devices (no duplicate names). If I want to reuse one, I can reassign the previous one to OLD-NAME-1 or something like that. The other name can then be reused for a newly installed device.

I have reinstalled UD several times when diagnosing computer problems, and a couple of computers have crashed and gone away. All of those old device names still remain, even though only a few are now active.

BOINC assigns new strange names of its own, so I don't mess with those at all.

Thanks, Didactylos.

Backward foster,
It is not, and should not be, necessary to remember device names but it would be nice if it was possible for me to re-use a device name and not have it treated as a different device. Currently, even if you re-use a name it gets a new device id, resulting in multiple stats entries for that name.

Even given that, all that is needed is for a user's stats to be summed per device name rather than per device id.
Internally, WCG simply assigns a number to each device
What it does internally should not determine what I see.
It is possible to change the NAME for an UD version device if you want.
I don't want to change anything, I want to keep the same name for the same device and have it recognised as the same device.

Re: Where is UD device id stored

It's no different for WCG(UD) or the BOINC global system.... a reinstall is creating a new unique handshake id. The variation is, that in BOINC a member can merge a device essentially moving the cumulative credit of a previous machines(s) into a single device ID, whilst in the database the WU historic results data remains with the original device ID. Not yet at WCG, because its a complex hybrid of 2 distribution systems.

Whilst at WCG a device name can be changed to anything one wants it to be, it cannot be done at BOINC. The system picks up the name as it is known in the operating system..... thus one device is called tpxd_dx3fg1tx. My fault, not knowing the intricacies and lack of planning...... the latest machines is now called 'lapsed'.

As we go forward we learn from past mistakes (we hope).

cheers

How does this not work for you? I've used it to keep my (albeit old) UD installs when imaging my PC's and it's worked.

Re: Where is UD device id stored

U mean to say that you restore a complete backup of the World Community Grid directory structure and all before a re-image and than put it back? I think denishowe learned from someone if a few components were saved and restored it could be done?

The full restore has worked for me, not to get a new device assigned after a full OS reinstall. Explicitly, i did not do a reinstall, so the WOS software control applet / registry has no knowing of WCG agent being on the system..... it does not need to know. Manually created a few short cuts and an autorun entry. If it works for anyone else, great, but no guarantees.
