progress on the project

Hi,

I am curious why exact progress on the project is not present (for all project not just this one)

the servers have a finite number of WU to send. once al have been crunched, presumably the project is finished. Why can't we know that total number of WU that there are?

I think that if people will see progress it will make them feel that they are actually doing something. FIY, this is the reason there are progress bars in applications, so the user will see that something is happening

right now, all we have are estimates, for only the FAAH. I think all projects should have exact progress.

For many projects, there is not a finite number of WU. New batches of WU are added on a regular basis, which makes a % complete read-out very difficult to implement.

Re: progress on the project

ZURP, please see other posts and discussions on the subject. Ryan is correct, except for FAAH, we have no estimates and even that is up in the air as 'experiment 6' is still in preparation. For HCMD phase1 we know the body of work is about 2 months worth, once the full weight is unleashed.... it's running presently very low priority (waiting for all clear on initial bug fixes), unless u have selected for it to be the only project.

As for updates, WCG is pushing the project scientists to keep their websites up to date for project projections, so will ask for the management to give it another refresh request for attention.

cheers

Re: progress on the project

You can look here :

http://www.dbbm.fiocruz.br/labwim/bioinfoteam...eComparison/progress.html

however it is only updated as for December 21th, 2006:

Run Time (y:d:h:m:s)
357:077:16:14:09

Results Returned
647,788

% of total finished
17%

Run Time Per Calendar Day (y:d:h:m:s)
8:184:08:23:12

Run Time Per Result (y:d:h:m:s)
0:000:04:49:50

Results Per Calendar Day
15,423.52381

At current speed, the GenomeComparison project will complete in 205 calender days, corresponding to 1644 years of processing

Re: progress on the project

Thanks Faust26,
Of course, the number of results required will probably increase by the time we reach the end of the current genomes in the file, since new genomes are constantly being added, but this gives us something we can follow.

Looking at http://www.dbbm.fiocruz.br/labwim/bioinfoteam...eComparison/progress.html
The Genome Comparison Project
Project Progress 21 Dec 2006
Results Returned: 647,788
% of total finished: 17%

Therefore the total results desired = 647788 / 0.17 = 3,810,517

Looking at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewProject.do?projectShortName=fcg1
Genome Comparison Project Statistics 05 Jan 2007 18:06:02 (UTC)
Results Returned: 935,144

% of total finished on 05 Jan 2007 = 935144 / 3810517 = 24.5%

Nice discovery Faust26. Will add Lawrence's algorithm to the Projects Pie. If u bookmark that, you'll be able to view progress almost daily.

Re: progress on the project

Sekerob, how often does the Projects Pie refresh itself? It looks to me that the current Pie is dated from December 18, 2006.

Re: progress on the project

Added the progress percent for GC. As at this writing they are on 28.8%. Not added HCMD yet as it does not register visibly in the pie.
