devilish Re: Slashdot Users are slowing down...

Another thing that may take more time is the verification of the results. As I understood it, results are returned and collected in batches, and the batch is sent back to the lab for analysis. Only when the batch is complete do the results appear as 'returned' in the system, which means you won't get points for WU's if they are still waiting on other WU's to finish.

But we will retaliate eventually :)

cool Re: Slashdot Users are slowing down...

I had better correct this. Points are awarded as soon as the server acknowledges receipt of a result. They show up on the local Agent immediately. However, the server statistics are run at 0600 GMT (1 AM EST) to compute the statistics up to 2400 GMT (7 PM EST) and then statistics pages are uploaded to Akamai for web viewing. This upload finishes before 0700 GMT (2 AM EST). During the upload you can move through various statistics pages and see the 'as of' date vary by 24 hours. This means that the statistics shown on the web are always 7 to 31 hours behind reality.

The results returned to the World Community Grid are not immediately returned to the Institute for Systems Biology. The WCG receives a batch of work units from the ISB. When we complete an entire batch, we consolidate the results and send that batch back to the ISB "for verification and analysis". We sent back our first batch around the beginning of the year. It seems likely that grid.org finished their first batch earlier. Right now we are hoping that we will soon hear news from the ISB so that we can begin making progress reports to our members.

Keep in mind that this is a new startup at several points. There is the creation of batches of work units, sending them and collecting the results, consolidating the results back into a result batch, then processing the result batch back at the ISB, then analysing and thinking. I expect problems can pop up at each step the first time.

Re: Slashdot Users are slowing down...

Is it bad that I have a fantasy about loading up a pair of old PII 266s laying around and instead of using them as dummy file servers or firewall boxes...putting WCG on them? I fantasize about it simply because I know it would be like setting a cardboard box in front of a semi and watching it get crushed at 100mph. But at the same time, I could reduce the profile storage space to 50Meg or so, and then it would have a chunck it could handle, and still be able to process little proteins in a week or so. I keep thinking about it. Is it worth the time to load winblows on them and try it out?

cool Re: Slashdot Users are crunching away

The only project running on the World Community Grid is very CPU demanding. But if you look over at http://www.grid.org , you can specify their Cancer Research Ligand Project, which uses smaller Work Units. The WCG was modelled after grid.org, so you already know how to install and run their Agent.

bye bye small work loads, I'm 88 hours in to my current load and it's only 24% done. sad

The only statistic that will suffer from the large WU's are 'results'. I'm at 121 hours and 88% done. When it finally finishes, the points and CPU time will be large.

Re: Slashdot Users are slowing down...

I joined /. because that's where I read about WCG, if I had heard about it elsewhere, I would've joined MyOnlineTeam (lots of nice folks in that team!). =)

But anyway, Slashdot Users' stats are quite utterly impressive. Almost 350k points earned per day. Every day, a year of processing time is eaten up. A year! if a Linux client came out (I personally don't use Linux, but what can I say), I reckon it would boost Slashdot Users impressively.

I'm new, been processing about a day and 5 hours now on my 3Ghz P4, already at 805 points. Hope to breach a 1000 in a little whlie (before I get off work today).
