Re: Deleting a profile

ah, now we're talking a crunching problem so we need to do a bit of delving:

What Operating System
What BOINC version (if not already mentioned)
How do you shut down the computer
How long do you allow the Computer to be on?

Please tell me it's Vista as we have a precooked list of fixes for that.

AND no, BOINC runs multiple jobs simultaneous based on 1 profile provided there is a multi core CPU in the computer. You can change the profile to only use 1, but it does not speed up the processing. Multi-core means you really have multiple processors in your computer.

Added: looks like Vista was reported before in another thread as Lawrence saw.

Re: Deleting a profile

I get to about 10% on both tasks but when I restart I am back to scratch again.

This is the problem with Vista. Until we get a new version of BOINC that is 'Vista-ready' you have to install BOINC to a different directory, such as C:\BOINC. Do NOT install to Program Files. It is explained in http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=12856

Lawrence

Added: We try to keep everything together by installing BOINC to a directory, then using subdirectories to hold the temporary check point files, etc. Vista does not allow writing to Program Files. So if you install BOINC to Program Files, everything works until you shut down. When you restart, there is no check point to restart from!

Re: Deleting a profile

What Operating System: Vista
What BOINC version: 5.8.15.0
How do you shut down the computer: complete shutdown
How long do you allow the Computer to be on? 12-14 hours a day

I have two profiles on my device page one made the 5/7 and one made on the 6/7. The first one is from my failed installation of bionic. I have tried to use the merge facility to make one profile on my device page but nothing came of that.

Bionic is installed in a folder on my D drive called bionic. The failed and removed bionic client was installed straight onto the D drive which cased the device to fail. My device page seems still to detect that one.

Re: Deleting a profile

okay, visit the Vista FAQ (see lawrencehardin post 1 up for link) and review point 5. MS promises to shut down Vista even quicker with SP1, but that's adverse as BOINC needs some time to save models of sometimes 500mb and more.

Re: Deleting a profile

Hello K-J,
BOINC has 3 named profiles - Work, Home and School. You assign each computer to one of those 3 profiles (well, there is default - - but that is a special case with special rules that can confuse new users). It does not matter how you have changed a profile, as long as it is not assigned to a computer.

The problem of losing your work after a shutdown is a Vista problem. If you are using a separate directory, then there must be a different permissions problem that keeps Vista from writing to the checkpoint file. The possible problems and cures are listed in the Start Here forum in the Vista thread.

Re: Deleting a profile

OK I have added the reg key and change the default to home in the hope that the system will remember where I am and that the second device on my profile will disappear.

Re: Deleting a profile

Update.

I have tried to change one of the profiles as suggested by Lawrence but the system has ignored that.

I have still two projects with amnesia. I followed the advice about the reg key but when I started up the laptop this morning. I am back to square one.

Any ideas?

Re: Deleting a profile

Checkpoint Saving is an important event for progress to be written permanently to disk. This can be recorded if you have a BOINC client >= 5.8.16 by adding a small text file into the BOINC program directory called cc_config.xml with following content minimum:
<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<checkpoint_debug>1</checkpoint_debug>
<task>1</task>
<file_xfer>1</file_xfer>
</log_flags>
</cc_config>

Make sure the file saved is exactly named as the bolded above.

Restarting BOINC or doing the Advance menu "Read Config File" (Only in 5.8 and above clients), will start the recording of the save points to the message log.

Before closing down the machine, open BOINC Task Tab and write down progress percent and CPU Time accumulated. Go to message tab and write down last time a checkpoint was saved. The lines looks like this:
11/07/2007 09:11:33|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result ld883_00020_4 checkpointed
11/07/2007 09:29:20|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result ld883_00034_11 checkpointed
11/07/2007 09:31:22|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result ld883_00020_4 checkpointed

11/07/2007 09:54:15|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result ld883_00020_4 checkpointed
11/07/2007 10:14:15|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result ld883_00020_4 checkpointed
11/07/2007 10:14:20|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result ld883_00034_11 checkpointed
11/07/2007 10:35:55|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result ld883_00020_4 checkpointed
11/07/2007 10:36:50|World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result ld883_00034_11 checkpointed

If you find the time to do this, let us know the outcome.
