Why do the graphics for Dengue have to be so political?

I respectfully ask why the graphics for our new project have to be so political. I am specifically referring to the 8th grade students that have so many opinions that refer to hatred. Only their opinions you know. Do they have any opinions about video games, perhaps?

I am a cruncher and I have the greatest sympathy for those that suffer from the many diseases that are out there. That is why I volunteer my CPU time. I hope to help find a cure through this distributed computing process regardless of what the disease is and whomever it affects.

I am really offended when I feel someone has to put me on a "guilt trip" to solicit my help. I don't believe in that. I help wherever I can.

Yes, hatred is out there. It can be overcome by standing up for what is right and doing the right thing. I believe that discussion should be left somewhere else.

Your thoughts?

nix the video game comment. Why didn't any of the students say what a great idea it is for people that are working together towards a solution?....like WCgrid is working together to get rid of these diseases....

Re: Why do the graphics for Dengue have to be so political?

mclay, as I understand it the students were asked for their thoughts on the subject "making the world a better place". It's sad that the main thing they identified is hatred: war, racism, bullying - the many forms that hatred takes. Sad, but let's be blunt: it's an accurate indictment of the world we live in.

It's not a guilt-trip. After all, you're helping out already. The writings are there for contemplation, and to involve the students in the project. It's not personal or political.

It may be an accurate assessment of their schoolyard. There may be some pent-up rage because students aren't even allowed to go outside for recess any more.

They asked the students, the ones that showed up ... and that is what they got back.

Background. These are the categories from the Lanier Middle School website. How many of these actually deal with education, and how many deal with trying to keep the students IN the building?

Re: Why do the graphics for Dengue have to be so political?

With all due respect to everyone in this forum, but I felt the same way that mclay did as well.

It is my opinion that to bring people together to combat diseases such as this one we need a unifying force. History has shown that a force focusing on the positive (such as "I have a dream" by Martin Luther King Jr) is better at unifying than one that is negative.

Regardless of the outcome, I will still continue to crunch and hope that the accumulation of small contributions from myself and thousands of others will help bring a better world to everyone.

Re: Why do the graphics for Dengue have to be so political?

It does not seem that the "real" question is whether the comments are offensive or political. We can debate forever about the content of the comments themselves.

The real issue is whether they are necessary, relevant, and contribute to the search for a cure. It is clear that they are unnecessary, irrelevant and out of context, and are hurting the search for a cure because some are having to turn it off.

To me, the resolution is obvious - the comments should be removed. Losing crunchers over something so stupid is, well, stupid.

Well i say if someone is going to leave over something this stupid it shows they are on the same mental level as those children--so they are the ones that are stupid and dont really care about this program---let them leave!!

Re: Why do the graphics for Dengue have to be so political?

I agree with Lighthouse. If I choose to contribute my processor time to help find a cure to Dengue Fever, why do I have to be punished by having to look at some teenager's opinions.

I also would like to see the information screens about the Dengue Fever go away. If I would like more information about the thing, I'm sure I can find in the internet. The only relevant information I want to see in the screen saver is the spinning molecul thing.

The least they could do is make the extra clutter optional. Also the graphical layout is pretty bad.
