The thread Sekerob mentions is locked so I'll mention this here.

I too was wondering what's up with this task, the UD down thing (a cunning plan?!) has made me install Boinc and so I can run HCC. It's spending a lot of time in the kernel (typically sitting on say 15-20%), and has massive amounts of page faults.

Its doing it on and old Pentium (single core) and an Athlon XP (single core), on W2K and XP. It's intermittent, the kernel times anyway, sometimes the red line disappears. But the page faults are up into the billions, and there is no need for that, there is over 1/2GB free! It could of course be more than one thing. If they are making some unneeded system calls in a loop, I'm sure that woudn't help things?

I'm a bit warey of it so I think I might stick to crunching the other tasks. Surely this must be slowing this task down though?

Re: Page Faults

Here is the HCC thread: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=17244

The staff are working on the Linux version right now and intend to debug the Mac version of HCC when Linux is fixed but they are very aware of the page faults. If there is anything they can do about it, I am sure that they will. (Last I heard, knreed was looking into it.) But . . . since they have not promised anything, I suspect that it is caused by the algorithm and cannot be easily changed.
