First off, Jonathan, check with the library and see if they have study carrels reserved for graduate/doctoral students. I've know the libraries at some colleges to have these - essentially rooms not much bigger than a broom closet with enough room for a desk not much bigger than a TV tray, a chair, overhead light with switch and a small storage cabinet above the desk. Most importantly, each has a small, lockable door. If you have a power outlet and some way to manage internet connectivity, then it's up to the question of if the ventilation is good enough to keep the machine from overheating. You have to pay rent for these though.

Stefan, Jonathan, both your statements are a great illustration of the great diversity of this team. Our members come from all over the world, all kinds of backgrounds and many different cultures. For some of us, the cost of electricity is a big factor limiting how much we can crunch. For others, that's not a factor so we have enough machines that the collective heat they generate becomes a factor. Some of us only have a small corner of a room for our crunchers and others have an entire room just for that use. Some of us rely on using available machines at work, be that one or one hundred, for our crunching while others own their own machines. Some crunch 24x7x365 while others only crunch when their machines are on but idle. What can seem simple and straightforward to one is complex to another due to these differences. It makes for a interesting team to lead too!

Well, who knows, maybe some will free up after the end of the spring semester? Can't hurt to get on the waiting list - if you aren't already. Good luck with the law firm! I'm sure they could go for all the PR they want whether they're part of MOT or not. If not, there's also the possibility of them becoming a partner with WCG. True! I really didn't intend to sound like a smart aleck with my suggestions!

I enjoy the luxury of being able to add servers from work while others only
can use their own private machines from home. At home I have a
basement which is cool all summer but of course while I was a student
(compu science as well) I had a small room only and would also have
been unable to run a bigger machine park at summer due to heat (let
alone the space limitations in a student room). Since I'm now employed
and married with (step) children, house and cars, I sometimes forget those
student years. Sorry!!

I'm really glad we are well on our way to complete the 50 mio challenge in
time as I won't be able to add the two new IBM servers before January.
We have moved our servers to an older part of the hospital and the power
lines here are very old -- to protect the servers from peaks and short
outages all server racks (except this new one) has USVs. I would not run
production machines without USVs anyway but I would usually begin to
set up these new servers and do 1-2 weeks of configuration and burn-in
without. But with these older lines we shy away from that and wait until
the missing USVs are installed as well. But they won't come this year;
I hope for early to mid January.

After all I have to keep parmesian off my back ;)
