Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 23 smilesmile

Man, talk about starting off the year with a blast! LOTS of milestones today first. It seems like it was just the other day that marysduby hit 13 million and now they're up another half million! Dave Bell hit 2 million today so they may well end 2008 with 3.5 million or more. Also, welcome back Mushball! I wasn't aware of a new visit from the base campers. Could this be something else??? biggrin We lost VAIO GRX616, janet keller, Charles Chan and rwillis from our active ranks today. Don't forget to update your signatures with your new HOF banners!

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 23 smilesmile

Okay, with the great start to the year today, the law of averages didn't waste any time kicking in. I had stopped to check on my C2D machine and, while I'm still not sure what I did or if it even mattered but suddenly, all the WUs (the ones waiting in line) below the two that were crunching suddenly one by one started giving "Computational error" messages and going to 100%. I managed to suspend the project and save about half of what I had in my queue. Realizing it probably had been a couple of weeks since I had rebooted (we know how stuff out of the Dark Tower of Redmond is sad ), I did that, defragged, upgraded BOINC from 5.10.28 to 5.10.30 (just in case) and started things back up. Everything seems okay now but I expect my numbers to drop for a few days as I'm expecting more WUs than not to go into the PV jail for a bit. SIGH!

5.10.30 is the most stable for me ... especially for the dreaded Vista machines. Got 92 in PV jail ... seems to be a constant more or less. But all states strive for equilibrum ... or so they say. biggrin

Thanks Dataman. Didn't expect much in the way of a BOINC problem being on 5.10.28 as it wasn't that far behind the latest. I've learned with any Windont machine that it's wise to reboot pretty regularly and, if some odd problem crops up, reboot first and see if it still happens.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 23 smilesmile

A WONDERFUL NEW YEAR TO EVERYBODY!!!

@Dataman
Stefan, good job. applause Did you add some more crunching power? wink

Thank you! Yes, brought up one more machine (very old, has no real
function) which had silently crashed with a hard disk problem -- now in
operation again.

@blizzie et al. who do/intend overclocking:

OC thought 1:
=========
It is not advised to do over-clocking (neither main processor or graphics
processor) with PASSIVE cooling (heat sink only), you should ALWAYS do
ACTIVE cooling (sink with fan or sink with liquid cooling). Some companies
(and OC freaks) suggest fancy passive heat sinks that put your hardware
to risk.

OC thought 2:
=========
I think without thorough checking of fault handling in WCG the use of
over-clocked CPUs for crunching is irresponsible! If you operate CPUs
outside their specification (speed and/or temperature) then errors CAN
and DO occur! So this usually is only done for gaming and other "unimportant" tasks.

I'm not sure if every result is "validated" by sending each WU out more
than once -- if not, positive results can be missed!! If a result is reported
as "positive" (whatever that means for a given project) it is checked again
but if a result is (falsely!) reported "negative" (although it possibly contains
an epoch making find) it may be lost to the community!!

Same is valid for heat and memory -- blizzie, do you operate that Zephyr
machine without a case?? I often see that and people who see these
pictures might think that cooling is even improved this way. Don't be
fooled by that idea -- cases are designed to create an optimal air-flow
driven by the fans. Operating a naked motherboard reduces the risk of
heat building up as result of a fan failure but actually reduces cooling in
normal operation as you lose the air flow for the complete mobo. RAM
chips have a rather low temperature at which they begin to produce
errors and not every mobo uses ECC (memory error correction method).

So please use over-clocking (and cooling) in a responsible way and check
back with the WCG programmers if false negatives can cause a problem.
If so, it's not worth it -- given in first place we crunch for cures and not for
points.

Best regards, Stefan.

Keith, when I reach 2,000,000 MOT points with WCG in a day or two I'll be wandering off for a while to do some crunching for MOT at POEM@HOME, here.... http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/

Yes, we do have a finger in that pie too. laughing

Hey Mate! I though you may have sneaked in a few more CPU cycles. wink Parmesian is nipping at your heels.

I'm not a good candidate for OC'ing anyway. I already have a heat load problem and am bleeding $'s from the electrical costs. Besides ... "vanilla" is a good flavor. laughing biggrin

Cheers!
