Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 23 smilesmile

A WONDERFUL NEW YEAR TO EVERYBODY!!!

@Dataman
Stefan, good job. applause Did you add some more crunching power? wink

Thank you! Yes, brought up one more machine (very old, has no real
function) which had silently crashed with a hard disk problem -- now in
operation again.

@blizzie et al. who do/intend overclocking:

OC thought 1:
=========
It is not advised to do over-clocking (neither main processor or graphics
processor) with PASSIVE cooling (heat sink only), you should ALWAYS do
ACTIVE cooling (sink with fan or sink with liquid cooling). Some companies
(and OC freaks) suggest fancy passive heat sinks that put your hardware
to risk.

OC thought 2:
=========
I think without thorough checking of fault handling in WCG the use of
over-clocked CPUs for crunching is irresponsible! If you operate CPUs
outside their specification (speed and/or temperature) then errors CAN
and DO occur! So this usually is only done for gaming and other "unimportant" tasks.

I'm not sure if every result is "validated" by sending each WU out more
than once -- if not, positive results can be missed!! If a result is reported
as "positive" (whatever that means for a given project) it is checked again
but if a result is (falsely!) reported "negative" (although it possibly contains
an epoch making find) it may be lost to the community!!

Same is valid for heat and memory -- blizzie, do you operate that Zephyr
machine without a case?? I often see that and people who see these
pictures might think that cooling is even improved this way. Don't be
fooled by that idea -- cases are designed to create an optimal air-flow
driven by the fans. Operating a naked motherboard reduces the risk of
heat building up as result of a fan failure but actually reduces cooling in
normal operation as you lose the air flow for the complete mobo. RAM
chips have a rather low temperature at which they begin to produce
errors and not every mobo uses ECC (memory error correction method).

So please use over-clocking (and cooling) in a responsible way and check
back with the WCG programmers if false negatives can cause a problem.
If so, it's not worth it -- given in first place we crunch for cures and not for
points.

Best regards, Stefan.

Happy New Years to you. =)

My main computer has a Thermaltake V1 heatsink on it.
Room temp - 70 F
Idle - 24 C
Crunching 100% load - 52 C "in my table" and 46 C out on the floor

Yes my Quad core is indeed caseless. And yes I know the temperatures are worst like that. G0 stepping Quad Cores have a thermal limit of 71 C. My Quad Core crunches with CPU temp of no higher than 55 C on all 4 cores. This computer is not overclocked and it has the stock heatsink. I have a fan on top of my RAM, keeping it cool and air from it reaches the northbridge and southbridge, also keep it moderately cool. Until I get a better motherboard (DFI Blood Iron for $105 and a Tuniq Tower CPU Cooler for $45) I cannnot overclock the Quad)

Every result that is sent back is validated. I check daily to make sure I don't have work units that Errored out or Invalid ones.

Here's one of my stress tests for proof.

I'm crunching for speed. To get more results out for research.
Aeon isn't used solely for crunching but my Quad is.

Trust me, I know what I'm doing. wink We overclockers push for every ounce of performance. tongue
Thanks for caring though. smile

I have a few Q6600 GO's crunching away OC'd at 3.4GHz on air (Asus P5K + Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme coolers) nice and stable and never go above 50C - you should see the speed them WU's crunch! shock

I've also used the Tuniq Tower - but to be honest I'm finding the TR Ultra's better.

Either way, good luck with it Blizzie cool

Yup the Ultra 120 Extremes are very nice. But it's $60 + $15 fan. A bit expensive. sad Tuniq is only $45. ASUS P5Ks are good Quad overclockers. $140 though. DFI Blood Iron is also really good for $105. Isn't as "advanced" as the ASUS, but it works since the Quad will only be crunching.

I don't think I'll be buying any more parts though.. Maybe if it goes on sale or something; leaving for college and I can't bring my desktops with me. crying

Second day of the year and you're thinking I have a target already? I'm an OLD fart, and senile at that! You overestimate me. laughing

Actually, I'm inclined to wait and see how January goes in terms of the impact of the demise of UD. If there's no big impact, I'm leaning towards 55 million - go up 10 percent basically. Now, if you'd be willing to do some hard time* wink and spend the year with us, we could go for 100 or 110 million. **

*sorta like a one hand poker match, all in, everything you have

** maybe you oughtta call me Metastopholes

You may be old and senile keith - but you are crafty and wily enough to pull those heart strings laughing

Hmmm, for me to do 55 Million in a year I would have to average 150K a day - so its possible I guess thinking .......now stop this right now keith, I ain't going to bite hypnotized

....and of course I didn't need to look up Metastopholes either whistling

DANG! You mean you actually THUNK it out? Well, at least enough to figure it was really doable....WOW.....

Maybe Metastopholes IS an apt name - and here I thought it should really be PT Barnum. whistling

Jeez. shock How many cores do you have? straight face

I really need to overclock my Quad. I can't afford to spend $170 more though. crying *sigh* My energy bill for this month is $120. It used to be under $40. crying
