biggrin Re: God, I hope Roger is ok.

Actually its not to go faster, its to save power. The cost per watt-hour is much better and will pay off the transition before the machines loose their tax write-off incentive. If you wait until they die, you will pay more and get less as time goes on.

What I did to fight this effect is much the same, but I have fewer machines and they are all in the same room. So I just swapped out all the socket 7 systems with a few duo's and a quad. I dropped my power usage in half and now pump over twice as much. If I didnt do anything, by now I would be having to cut systems due to costs.

The reason why I say this, is that I dont want your brilliant DC career go down the tubes because some self-centered accountant thinks this is wasted money on a pipe dream.

Oh and thanks for turning me onto tigerdirect.com. How do you think I afforded the cost of upgrading? I’m on a fixed income.

LOL, yes that might work for some things, but we have lots of machines that work for our purposes. Updating them wouldn't make our work go any faster, so we use what we have until they die.
Many of the programs we run don't work on a client/server setup.
I like the dual Quad Xeon setup.
I think it would be a lot faster than my dual Xeon 2.66 core solo system.
I need to check and see if that board would support dual or quad core Xeons with a BIOS update. It has XP Pro, not server. But I think I have a copy of Server2003 here somewhere that I got from MSDN....

Now you can make an informed decision on what a Quad can do over a Duo. Other than the processor core speed and number of cores, the rest of the boxes are basically the same, except one uses SCSI RAID 5 and the other has SATA RAID 5. I want more Quads.

Re: God, I hope Roger is ok.

Well, C2D and multi-cores are beautiful, but I've made up my mind - I'm not gonna upgrade until summer 2009, unless there will be something nice and tasty for pretty price.
Yes, it's "old" (~3-4 years) single core, but before that I had AMD K6-2, it was ~8 years old when I get something better. biggrin
Oh! I got my first Mega points on WCG! Which is.. wait rolling eyes ... 1.54% of our teams total points. biggrin

You wont be seeing me much for the next 10 days or so. I'm going on vacation but my machines will be cruching. All except one laptop that is coming with me that will only be connected to the internet a few times in my absence.

Doing the Dum Dum da Dum on Sunday.

Re: God, I hope Roger is ok.

If only I could get that rig for the same price here in Europe ...

BTW, I switched off hpf and faah, check my scores go up!

I think they ship worldwide. If not, I can, unless there is a trade restriction.

I'm testing rice. But HCC is in the lead for me at the moment.

I saw your post and thought you were speaking rhetoricly. I had to do a double take on the second post to see what you really ment.

Sorry your post slipped by.

Re: God, I hope Roger is ok.

THNX General!
For some reason prices (numerically) are the same here or higher, but the EURO is way ahead of your $ ... :(
I guess they should even be customs free coz of a trade agreement on electronic goods. Next time I upgrade I might ask you to ship for me, coz u.s. stores usually don't ship to europe.

Let me check, I think they ship worldwide as well. But I would also help get products around.

Let me ask you this, "Would you pay for shipping if I can come up with some used Xeons?"
