Re: Welcome new member twilyth

twilyth,

The first thing I would check is the device settings to see what the work unit cache is set to. On different machines I have a cache of either 1/2 or 1 day. There was one person here who was only able to connect to WCG about once a week. His cache was 8 days.

As far as boinc quitting - I have no clue. The help threads should have something.

Re: Welcome new member twilyth

It seems to pretty much ignore my cache settings - which I set locally. I'll try setting them on the device menu on the web site as well, but the local settings should override. Not really a big deal as long as the servers are up and providing wu's as needed, but there seem to be a few hiccups lately.

Re: Welcome new member twilyth

I just bumped every thing up to 10 days and I finally realized that they compute the total time based on how long it takes a cpu to crunch a wu. Since a 3-4 hour wu get's done in about 6-10 minutes, that's why I have such a low buffer. But bumping it up to 10 days DID help. Thanks.

Re: Welcome new member twilyth

Yup. What rilian said.

The HTPC is up and running. Not sure if I mentioned that elsewhere. It only has a 7750 running 5 threads, but it's helping.

The SR2 is all put together except the card but when I powered it on, nothing happened. That made me very depressed. Very, very depressed. It's probably just something simple but I get soooo bummed out when that happens. I'll try to look at it tomorrow. Maybe it just wants a video card, but I don't think that's is. Anyway, I'll pop in a 7950 and give it another go and see what happens. I might have to check the grounding too since it's mounted on a test bench. Le Sigh.

Re: Welcome new member twilyth

We've moved up 14 positions in 18 days and I think there is a good chance that we could be in the top 100 again before the HCC-GPU wu's run out. However reaching our all time high boinc rank of 60 I think will require recruiting a few more people to the team - something I'm afraid I won't be very much help with.

Of course the competition is really just a side show. I'm sure we all understand that. What really matters is the work, and who does that or what motivates them is irrelevant. Even so, it can be fun as long as it doesn't get serious or too silly.

Re: Welcome new member twilyth

After jabbering about it for at least the past month, I finally got the SR2 fired up. Turns out that there's this thing called . . . ummm, what was it now?

Oh, right - an "ON" switch. D'oh! I kept turning on the power supply and forgot that I also needed to jumper the power sw pins on the m/b. That's what life is like when you're partially brain dead. Sort of amusing though too, you have to admit, so at least I provide my own entertainment.

Now I'm getting an error message that there is something wrong with the monitor or video card. I popped in an old nvidia gt210 or 220 I think, but my guess is it's KVM - again. So I guess I'll try to dig out another monitor or just use another input on the HDTV, 'cause, you know, that always works with early generation Sony HDTV's. {le very small sigh}

However as a back up plan which I think may well become Plan A anyway, I've ordered a 1200w PSU for the octo core so I can put in a third 7950. Oh yeah baby. You heard that most righteously and correctly. A 3-way. Right here, right now.

Re: Welcome new member twilyth

The SR2 is up and crunching. I had to do 2 OS installs because I tried to do too many things simultaneously and corrupted the first one. Then I wasn't feeling well which is my normal state. Finally got back to it and did the reinstall which looked like it would be another failure but after a repair start it did seem to work finally.

Right now there is only one 7950 running 14 threads so we'll how that goes. It is however overclocked to 1100ghz so I want to make sure that I'm getting all valid results. If that looks good, I'll move a card from another rig. I'll order a 7770 tonight to make the switch.

The addition of this card might bring my daily total up into the 800k ppd boinc range, but that might be optimistic, so we'll have to see. It should certainly be over 600k and I think 700k is likely.
