Re: Riddle Of The Day 2 - Please Check Here Daily For Updated Riddles

Hi Graham, fellow riddlers,

I promised #8 would be solved today! Hmm, I'm actually beginning to doubt the validity of my solution, but I'll try anyway!

#8:
I was thinking to freeze the bottle, hoping the air inside will contract (compact) and suck the cork in.

An alternative would be to heat the bottle with a flamethrower, so the air expands and blows the cork out, but that would only work if the thread is NOT tied to the cork.

#40: the TIRE belongs in row A, because it's not a landscape feature.

#45: 33.3 cans?

Ok, that's it for today!

8 is probably supposed to be something like use a focused radiant heat source to burn the string, but the practicality of that solution depedns on properties of the materials involved, and other unspecified variables

Re: Riddle Of The Day 2 - Please Check Here Daily For Updated Riddlesup,

Hi joatmon,

8 is probably supposed to be something like use a focused radiant heat source to burn the string, but the practicality of that solution depedns on properties of the materials involved, and other unspecified variables

Yeah, I can see you get a magnifying glass biggrin

But there is a brand of Rum that is sold in a white bottle you can't see through. If the ring is suspended from a thread inside such a bottle, try to burn the string!!! So you're right, that's most likely NOT the solution.

But I noticed something strange: You may not touch anything, which is understandable. But THEN the riddle also specifies that the CORK must stay in place and intact. It does not say so about the thread or the bottle ;) The BOTTLE should be the weak spot, if you ask me...

But I've had my chance at #8, and I blew it. So, who am I to interfere?

EDIT: Hey, I was right after all: #8 has been solved today. But it was joatmon who did it, not me! Congratz, joatmon! smile

Re: Riddle Of The Day 2 - Please Check Here Daily For Updated Riddles

Hello Graham and fellow riddlers,

#57
A wealthy man named Richard Ellis had been counting his money.
When he finished, he accidentally left a $100.00 bill on his desk.
But when he returned for it a short while later, it was gone.
Only two other persons could have seen the bill.
One was the maid; the other was the butler.

The maid told him that she had hidden it for safekeeping under a green book that was on the desk.
But when they looked the bill was not there.

The butler said he had found the bill where the maid had left it.
He had placed it inside the book, where he thought there was less chance that somebody would find it.
He had written down the page numbers so that he would not forget them.
The bill was between pages 35 and 36, he said.
But when they looked, there was no money in the book.

After Mr. Ellis had talked to the maid and the butler, he called the police.
He was sure he knew who had taken the money.
Who was it, and how did he know?

Since pages 35 and 36 are the two sides of the SAME sheet of paper, the butler lied about having put the bill between them. The butler MUST be guilty. cool

Imagine John, a party magician, is carrying three pieces of gold each piece weighing one kilogram.
While taking a walk he comes to a bridge which has a sign posted saying the bridge could hold only a maximum of 80 kilograms.
John weighs 78 kilograms and the gold weighs three kilograms.
John reads the sign and still safely crossed the bridge with all the gold. How did he manage this?

He juggled the coins while crossing the bridge. At any time there was always at least one coin in the air, NOT weighing down on the bridge. cool

#59
How many times can you subtract the number 5 from 25?

Only once, because after that it's not 25 any more biggrin

Four men were in a boat on the lake.
The boat turns over, and all four men sink to the bottom of the lake, yet not a single man got wet! Why?

#56
Mick and John were in a 100 meter race.
When Mick crossed the finish line, John was only at the 90 meter mark. Mick suggested they run another race.
This time, Mick would start ten meters behind the starting line.
All other things being equal, will John win, lose, or will it be a tie in the second race?

You have 9 golf balls. 8 of which are equal in weight.
The ninth is slightly heavier then the rest.
You also have a balancing scale.
Can you use this scale two times and only two times in order to tell which ball is heavier?
[Correctly Answered ]

#55 I guess that means the men were married.
#56 John will lose he will run 11 sets of 9metres while Mick will run 11sets of 10. (Not quite real world proof)

#61 Yes. Put 3 balls on each side of scales. From this you can identify the set of three balls which includes heavy ball. (Scales level then set not on scales else those on low side). From the "heavy" set place one on each side - by same principle you identify heavy ball.

#53 $45 ($5 per letter)

#54 Probably 3, although you'd need 4 to be certain (three would catch 99 in 99 minutes, and you'd hope that one gets lucky at the end)

#40 Tower, they can all be preceeded by "water"
