rose Re: Versions for Mac and other computers

I also would like to see a Linux version.

Perhaps the client could be seperated into the 2 parts of Compute Engine, and Information and Control GUI. Then operating systems like Linux, UNIX, Windows NT/2000/XP can run it in the background as a service.

It would also be good for *all* the different clients to be able to use the exact same data file formats, so that, for example, the Linux client and the Windows client can both use/continue the same project.

My computers are either Linux or Linux/Windows dual boot. As a Windows only client WCG will get a small percentage (say 5%) of my daily CPU cycles. If there was a Linux client then all available cycles would go to WCG (say 95%), and I would have more machines running.

As a Software Developer I would be happy to donate some time and effort to achieve this, as the computing seems to be for non profit to benefit all mankind. Unfortunatly the software is not open source. I'm aware of the accuracy and security concerns with open sourcing this particular type of software (distributed computing clients), and I would be happy to sign NDAs myself for this project.

Re: Versions for Mac and other computers

A multi OS commandline client would be very welcome since i got a few "spare" *nix based servers which i wouldn't mind lending some cpu for this noble cause :-). I would rather use a commandline "non gfx" client for my workstation aswell.

I'd like a linux version too (an I have some nice SMP computers ;)).

I could help porting it if I had the source code :)

Re: Versions for Mac and other computers

Chalk me up as another vote for a Mac/*nix version... prefereably CLI only so that it uses as little CPU time as possible... and so that I can install and run it easily on my headless, and very under-worked XServes. :)

Surely with all that Big UNIX iron lying around at IBM there are a few people willing to make a client fto UNIX. Porting to each platform should then become fairly trivial.... optimizations can come later.

Re: Versions for Mac and other computers

UD also did not have a non-Windows client AFAIK. The limitation was not the agent, but rather the underlying software that the agent used to do the actual crunching - this software was not owned by United Devices, and was donated to them to use. And, it was only written for Windows....

I assume that the new Agent is also suffereing from the same limitation - the underlying software that does the actual hardcore crunching is only written for windows. WorldCommunityGrid would have to petition them to port a *nix version for use before anything could happen

Re: Versions for Mac and other computers

Linux/x86 would add 5 machines for me
Linux/sparc would add 2

Looking forward to new clients...

The reason Linux/Unix/Mac are not currently supported is because the United Devices agent software only runs on Windows.

The actual program that's doing all the protein folding analysis, Rosetta, does indeed run on Linux and in fact I had to port Rosetta to the Windows platform to be used with this agent.
