Hello ScottCale,
I admit that I am interested too, even though I am too outdated to contribute useful code. But here is a monster thread over at Folding@home about their GPU software development project that I read over the 4th of July weekend: http://forum.folding-community.org/viewtopic.php?t=2135 It starts in 2002. You might want to fast-forward to mid-2004, when the coding starts. Most of the 2005 posts are wondering why there is not more information available or trying to urge patience. This is standard. I will not try to explain something that I am totally ignorant of. I just want to point to another project in an open university environment that has pretty much identical PR problems as we do. Bemused and without answers, mycrofth |

I understand your frustration, but the answer really is "We're working on it."
----------------------------------------As any developer can tell you, there is so much more to developing and deploying a software than just "porting code". The coding is the easy part. There is a lot of evaluation and planning that takes place. We don't want to commit to a date for obvious reasons: if we miss the date, for whatever reason, people will be screaming "where is it?" The average person has no understanding about the complexities of software development and they'll just focus on the date. As for Rosetta itself, it's not open source. The software is owned by the University of Washington. We have been given a license to modify it and deploy it on the grid. The final answer is: We're working on it (tm) ![]()

You could release the code and let the community resolve, develop the workarounds to get it on Linux... I have 2 Linux boxen to install on...

You could release the code and let the community resolve, develop the workarounds to get it on Linux... I have 2 Linux boxen to install on... It's impossible for us to release the code for several reasons:
We are working on a Linux client and it's pretty far along. Patience.

Yes it is taking longer than we wanted to to launch a Linux client. However, much of our energy is spent on finding new research projects to run on the grid. If there is no research to run, having a Linux client isn't going to help. Fortunately we have some new research that we will be anouncing soon. And the Linux client will follow shortly.
While waiting for the Linux client, everyone can point their favorite non-profit organization to this page and ask them to consider running their humanitarian reasearch on World Community Grid instead of on their own hardware: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/submit_a_proposal.html |

To piggyback on Bill's comment, it's not just the client. We're also working on getting a project boarded onto Linux as well. We can't have a client without a project, so both are being worked on.

Is there an email list I can join to be notified when a Linux client becomes available?

As of this time, the World Community Grid has not had reason to send out an email to all users. However, something as newsworthy as the release of a Linux client might be an item worth doing that. If you would like to receive email notifications from the World Community Grid, you will need to verify that your email address is correct in your profile (to get there, go to "My Grid" and click on "My Profile") and that you have checked the box marked "Information" followed by the text:
----------------------------------------World Community Grid plans to occasionally send out information and/or updates via email. Please check the box if you would like to receive information updates from World Community Grid. Note that the default at registration leaves that box unchecked. Regarding the Linux client... we started the internal Beta test and will keep members informed as to the latest status in the Linux FAQ which we plan to update later this week.
