Barney, where do you draw the line? Didactylos, my point is this; and this alone; 24 hrs is 24 hrs is 24 hrs. So; if I run a system on an AMD / Intel with a single core or if I run on an AMD / INTEL Multi-core (on the same chip) its still only 24 hrs of contribution. Now, if you have numerous physical systems contributing concurrently, then each of those systems is contributing 24 hrs... But that's how I read it.... it's not each cpu in a multi-core system gets credit for a day. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not going to loose any sleep on the topic; nor am I going to stop contributing but it seems somewhat skewed how these computations are performed. |

I don't know if it is feasible thing but wonder if I could implement HT in a Intel Quad processor that wasn't manufactured with HT included... ![]() Being serious for a moment and ignoring the smiley, you can get the same effect by running a hypervisor (VMware, Xen, etc.) and more than one operating system. Some OS's that are not hypervisor-aware will continue to accumulate CPU time when the OS is not actually running. There's really no excuse for this ... mainframes have handled it properly for about 40 years now. Anyway, back to the point, you can get more CPU hours while getting less actual work done, which isn't good for WCG or for the projects involved. It will always be possible to "game" the system one way or another, but everyone's goal should be to get the most WUs completed (and valid) as quickly as possible. - D |

If I were a cheat, I'd be setting up multiple VM's on my 32 way monster, each seen as a separate device. Yes, it's been done, for other reasons. Think this idea is not going to fly, in fact it's a certain free fall to the bottom of the Mariane trench for reasons discussed earlier in this thread. Once a way of recognition has been set it's not lightly changed.

Isn't it all about crunching WU? A quad that crunches 5 WU is more valuable to WCG than a single core P3 crunching one WU. Any form of recognition that attempts to make the two machines equal is counter-productive to the idea of recognizing member's contributions.

Doesnt the points system already make the difference between a p3 and a quad? Why not make the badges work on points rather than time?

another thought I had was to make badges for use of specific operating systems. I only use Windows and Linux but I would like to show people that I use these kinds of systems...

Perhaps WCG should start a new research project - to calculate the ultimate badge system...

I say leave things as they are, but additions would be nice. The enhanced badges for longer achievements are a great idea - whether it's diamonds added or a numeral. I also like the idea of printable certificates. Stanford's Folding at Home has some linked straight from your stats page and based upon your most recent milestone in a couple categories. Example points Certificate Example Results Certificate Also, the old Find-A-Drug project did similar certificates including one for the total number of Gigaflops you had contributed, which I thought was an interesting measure.

I'm not sure if they do it anymore but years ago SETI@Home did achievement certificates as well. I think I still have them filed somewhere when I used to participate before I found the personally more worthwhile WCG.

Certificates on call off is a standard BOINC website feature these days, at least now seen it on a number of projects.
