Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 33 smilesmile

Like you Blizzie, I would like to see WCG implement GPU processing and the power of them seems to be quite large.

I am guessing of course but it would seem to me that there are some very large numbers of standard CPU that are being employed while there is a much smaller number of GPUs.

So, WCG thinks that it is better to do the most work where the most processors are.

Again I am just guessing and based on the discussions you guys are having here, it would seem that the whole GPU thing is a bit to difficult for the average WCG contributor.

It would seem that they have decided to let the other projects work out the bugs and then when it is ready... Oh well, my crystal ball is not that clear these days so just consider this as an opinion.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 33 smilesmile

I know you won’t believe this but it is true. Yesterday morning, for the second time in less than a year, a very large Oak fell and tore out my power and telephone lines. The last time it was a nuisance; this time it was catastrophic. When it broke free it arced to the house. It fried:

* 1 1500VA UPS (you know the thing that prevents this from happening)
* 4 power supplies of 4 quad cores machines that were running at the time
* 4 power strips
* 1 KVM switch
* 1 printer transformer
* Pretty much everything in my home entertainment center that has an amp or pre-amp.
* My cell phone charger
* 1 bedroom alarm clock
* Several circuit breakers
* 1 microwave oven (I can live without everything above but I cannot live without a microwave wink )

PG&E and my electrician finished last night. AT&T just left and I have connectivity again. I am waiting for my insurance agent to arrive. I am rather demoralized at the moment. sad

I have two machines and two cards running but that will be it until the insurance (if any) gets sorted out.

sad

Yeah -- and I hope all goes well with your insurance company. That's a lot of stuff if it has to come out of pocket!

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 33 smilesmile

Alright everyone. I've been fiddling over this for a while now since it's spring break and I'm retooling my two systems. I'm currently seeing more research results being put out by Stanford's Folding@Home over what WCG and GPUGrid. It's been about a year and half here at WCG and I have yet to see results of the work units we've all been crunching together. Sure, research takes time, but news, update, something would be nice. Also, many members here on this forum have been asking about GPU updates and the answer remains the same. It remains in development, and in development it seems to stay. SETI and GPUGrid have implemented GPU crunching so why can't WCG? As some of you know, the power of the GPU is massive. If we're really trying to find a cure shouldn't we be harnessing the greatest?

Therefore, I'm thinking of moving on until I see figures to make me stay. I'm currently thinking of leaving my CPUs here at WCG for MOT but move my GPUs to Folding for team EVGA or team OCN (overclock.net).

Blizzie, I understand the sentiment. I'd love to see cures getting announced but medicine moves sooooo slowly. I look at crunching a lot like investing now. Good investing is diversified investing so I have diversified my crunching. I think Lattice is testing GPU crunching so it is starting to spread. The long view seems to work best with crunching. most projects seem to be run by a few students working for a professor who's doing the research. a few like WCG have slightly bigger staffs. That typically limited resource at so many projects is a big obstacle to GPU crunching. Just like the way you, Jonathan and DM sorted out how to get GPU crunching working here for the team, the projects that do have it are doing the same thing for other projects. It hasn't been that long since BOINC itself supported it with any reliability.

OUCH! You didn't happen to accidentally have some sort of run in with an ENT in the past, did you?
