WCGrid_Rosetta.exe at 100% CPU

When I log back in to my laptop from screen saver mode about half the time WCGrid_Rosetta.exe is executing at 100% CPU and doesn't stop. The only way I can stop it is by hitting the snooze button. This has finally got annoying enough to write in about.

Yes, I have "Run only as screen saver" checked.

Win XP SP1 (IBM eclient build), T40, 2G RAM

Re: WCGrid_Rosetta.exe at 100% CPU

Hum. What you descirbe is not how things should work. If you have "Run only as screen saver" checked, Rosetta should run at 100% until you take it out of screen saver mode by moving the "mouse" or touching a key on the keyboard. At that point it should go to sleep and only resume when the screen saver kicks in again due to inactivity on the mouse/keyboard.

I have never heard of this failing. confused

Does it interfere with the other work that you are doing on the machine?

How are you getting the CPU statistics...using alt-ctl-del?

Try using ctl-shift-esc, instead. It's safer. wink

Re: WCGrid_Rosetta.exe at 100% CPU

I agree -- that isn't the way it is supposed to work. I did a quick test on my system and selected "Run Only as Screen Saver." After making the selection, Rosetta was still running at 90-95%. I then hit the "Apply" button and Rosetta immediately dropped to 0%. Is it possible that you have not hit the "Apply" button?

I did some further testing and selected "Run Only as Screen Saver" and hit apply. On the information message at the bottom of the Agent window, I see, "Screen saver not running. Task execution paused...". I then selected "World Community Grid" as my screen saver and set it to go into screen saver in one minute. I waited and it went into screen saver. After about 10 seconds, I moved the mouse to get out of screen saver. I noted that the task run time had increased and again the "Screen saver not running. Task execution paused..." message was displayed. Rosetta had returned to 0% execution. This is all as I would expect.

Re: WCGrid_Rosetta.exe at 100% CPU

I have hit the "apply" button as this does work sometimes when I log back from the screen saver. The key here is that sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. This problem has been going on now for months and I'm really getting annoyed with it which is the reason for the post.

I am measuring CPU by using the Task Manager in XP. I can see in the process list that WCGrid_Rosetta.exe is using up 100% of the CPU.

Yes, it does affect my other work which is why I have to chase this down everytime it does not suspend because it is slowing my machine down.

So, whatever you do, don't pull the snooze feature out of the client otherwise I'd never have a work around.

Re: WCGrid_Rosetta.exe at 100% CPU

Well guys, I am pretty much stumped with this one. I have never heard of this behavior. I noticed that you are running an "IBM eclient build" at the SP1 level. I think this problem could as likely be an Operating System Problem as a Rosetta problem...actually it seems a little more likely to me the more I think about it.

IBM may have tinkered with the dispatching algorithm to accommodate some of their hardware/device drivers or may have dlls with the same names or something strange like that.

If I were you, I would email them and tell them that their WCG stuff does not get along with their version of XP. That might get their attention. Or, you might look and see if they have the upgrade to the SP2 out yet.. It would not surprise me if that fixed the problem.

I, and I expect others, will be interested to see what you find out. Regards.

Robert --

I noticed the "IBM eclient build" as well and have e-mailed one of the WCG techs and asked him to have a look at this.

Update: The expert in this area is traveling and the WCG Project Manager indicates that he will have him look into this as soon as he returns.

Re: WCGrid_Rosetta.exe at 100% CPU

I think the IBM eclient build is no more than standard XP with a list of specific fixes applied. I doubt there is anything hardware specific as it is the same build for all employee laptops no matter which laptop you have.

SP2 is still not available for employee laptops. I have no idea when, if ever, it will be.

Re: WCGrid_Rosetta.exe at 100% CPU

Hang in there Alexandre -- I renewed my request to the tech that is responsible for the Agent software. I am not sure what time zone he is working from. I agree that it probably isn't the software build that eclient provides. I just have not been able to duplicate it and thought it best to get the guy in here that knows the Agent internals.

Alexandre --

I got this note from the project member I asked to look at this:
I will contact him internally within IBM when I get back Wednesday. I have to run to get the bus to the ISB Symposium in 10 minutes and won't have much chance to ponder this. In the meantime, you might have him check what his screen saver setting is in windows, whether he might have installed the agent as a service or something... not sure exactly what to look for. Does he have all of the windows updates applied? etc. Thanks.
