Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 36 smilesmile

I have not been watching the points thing since Keith's stats machine has been disabled. I bet we both get passed by esoteric17 before long. It is all about the cures/solutions but the points thing is kinda fun smile

Summer heat will cause me to slow down a bit soon. As others have said, the electric bill will kill me. crying

i noticed you were gaining quickly last week and didn't want you to blow past me without the proper salute!

as for esoteric17, i know we're losing ground to our new crunchmaster, but we've been here a lot longer and have a big lead. with that said, nothing could make me happier than to have esoteric17, blizzie, and all the rest knock me down the list. the further down i go the more results MOT is putting together.

C'mon guys! catch me! biggrin

as for the power issue, i'm thankful that all my machines are running at the office. no need to power down for the summer.

Can I put a couple of my machines in your office biggrin
My old friend MarysDuby is the one to catch, but he is making that highly unlikely applause

No, I'm the first Harvard Humanist Community Organizing Fellow. I'll spend the summer organizing various atheist/nontheist/Humanist organizations in preparation for the launch of my mentor, Greg Epstein's new book Good Without God .

The Force is strong with this one ....

Credits or "dog year points", those are pretty good numbers.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 36 smilesmile

I'm surprised no one has resuscitated the Intel i7 discussion yet, so I'll apply the virtual defibrillator to the patient. biggrin For those not following the announcements, the i7-940 and i7-965 have been replaced by the slightly faster, slightly improved i7-950 and i7-975 at the same price points (or should I say the same overpriced points). I'd like to see a corresponding price drop for the i7-920, but I haven't yet ... or maybe there's a i7-930 waiting in the wings at the same price. Bottom line is the 920 is still, by far, the best price / performance value i7.

It'll be interesting to see where the upcoming i5 is priced when the parts are available in late August / early September (depending on which dates you trust more).

@Dr. Mike ... if you can keep waiting until September to see how things shake out, that might be the best decision. If you don't want to wait - and that's certainly understandable, the recommendation to go with an i7-920 still stands. If you can find a deal on a i7-940 (say USD 50 over the cost over a 920), it might be worth it. The fact that it's being discontinued really isn't a problem, but it remains to be seen if there will be any real discounting on what has definitely been an overpriced product.

A news site confirmed Intel announced Socket 1366 dead.
i5, Socket 1156, is replacing i7 completely.

Hey Blizzie.. haven't seen you lately.. hope things are well..

so does that mean no i7's at all?

Dr. Mike

Been busy so I haven't been around much.
i7 is just dead... i5 is going to replace them. Intel hasn't made up it's mind though.. they keep saying we're keeping high end i7. Then they said they're getting 920, now they say they're replacing all i7 with i5....

As you're quite aware, it all depends who you listen to and Intel is free to change their minds all the way up to the point where they discontinue i7 or decide to call it something else. Socket 1366 is going to continue on for Xeon, at any rate. All that and the hints at possible price breaks in the Nvidia GT9800 and GTX260 range are why I suggested waiting to see what's going to happen in the fall. The i5 announcement might be quite interesting. It could also lead to an i7 "fire sale"... or maybe not. And then there's the whole 32nm question.

(I've been on the new system fence so long I'm beginning to feel like Humpty Dumpty sad )

As to the Intel processor issue; here is another of the opinions.

Darth is quite right about

History has shown it is more about marketing than it is about the technology and so, it depends on what their marketers think will make them the most money longer term while beating up, but not killing, the competition.

I used to get money advising large companies on what to do about this same situation (with the then newer technologies). My advice most often came down to one thing: Buy only the computers you need when you need them..not before and not after. Waiting for the next big thing is a perpetual game and buying in-bulk pre-buys almost always leads to premature obsolescence and ensures that within a few years, you will have to do it again. While I used to have an inside track on what they (Intel and others) were going to do; now I am looking through the kaleidoscope of others’ opinions.

So, I just follow my old advice and substitute the phrase “want and can sneak it past the wife” for the word “need” smile My own computer buying is on hold for the time being because I do not need any and my wife wiped out my computer fund when she bought a car a few weeks back. sick

I work for him and I haven't even seen a DRAFT yet! But we've talked a lot and the book promises to be quite thoughtful.
