As "Krunchin Keith" @ GPUGrid says, "May the GeForce be with you."

MOT goes where no crunchers have ever gone before.

*Oops, that's Star Trek laughing biggrin laughing *

Are you off for the summer now, John?

No, I'm the first Harvard Humanist Community Organizing Fellow. I'll spend the summer organizing various atheist/nontheist/Humanist organizations in preparation for the launch of my mentor, Greg Epstein's new book Good Without God .

Do we get autographed copies? biggrin

Dr. Mike

I work for him and I haven't even seen a DRAFT yet! But we've talked a lot and the book promises to be quite thoughtful.

I'm sure it will be a good book.. can't wait to hear your opinion on it too..

Dr. Mike..

The Force is strong with this one ....

Credits or "dog year points", those are pretty good numbers.

I completed another one on a 9800GT ... 33:39 hours and 61,288 credits (429,016 DY points). I'm on a roll now. biggrin

The ironic part will come if someone asks me to review it. Reviewing one's academic mentor's debut book? Not academically advisable (FWIW Keith).

I can tell you that the basic point Greg will make is, to quote Joss Whedon at the Humanist Lifetime Achievement Award, “The enemy of Humanism is not faith; the enemy of Humanism is hate, is fear, is ignorance, is the darker part of man that is in every Humanist and every person in the world.” Here's a link so you can hear the speech if you're interested.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 36 smilesmile

The boards are on fire this morning at GPUGrid, AQUA and MW about credits. wink The CPU peeps think they are being cheated, the GPU peeps cry they deserve more than CPU peeps. GPUGrid says AQUA is too high. MW says they pay more because they are an alpha project (and have been for two years laughing ) AQUA says they are still making adjustments.

Does anyone else find this totally silly?

What got me LMAO was almost every poster starts with, "I don't crunch for credits BUT ... and then they go on for three paragraphs about how they are being screwed. laughing biggrin laughing

As more GPU projects roll, maybe it will force some kind of standard. I doubt it though.

I'm sorry .... I have been having a laughter attack this morning.

What does MOT think about points, credits and the current state of crunching?

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 36 smilesmile

Is a 9800GT still worth getting? My C2D has a 9800GT right now and I'm thinking of getting one more matching one. It's $99 after $20 MIR, and comes with CoD4/5 (which I can sell).

I still haven't bought anything with that $120 I made from selling the 9800GTX. (was waiting for prices to go down).

Points and credits are like the stats at a ball game (pick your sport). All that really matters is who wins or loses. In the grid computing universe, all that will really matter in the end is the results of all the WUs we crunch. If one of the BOINC sciences finds a cure for cancer - even just one kind of cancer - it will be worth the time and resources invested. Likewise, if SETI finds my people in a galaxy far, far away (or nearer) it will be worth it. biggrin

Now, along the way it would be ideal if stats were kept perfectly uniformly, but it isn't going to happen without a centralized authority with some control (and we know what a mess that would be). Even at WCG where there is centralized authority, there variation between what the various projects grant per hour. Even with the same project, there's variation. Even on projects without WU redundancy, there's variation. The uncertainty principle rules more than just the subatomic world.

But the nice shiny badges do give you a feeling that you've accomplished something.

You nailed it. We all crunch with hope and some of us are attracted by the bright and shinny things. biggrin
I tried to open a thread to discuss the credit issues in DC computing. But I see already that the Lord And Master of WCG with turn it into an argument. What was I thinking? wink If it does not attract some civil discussion I will have Tedi lock it before it turns in to another one of his flame threads. I am seriously thinking of joining the long list of people I know who refuse to crunch here because of the Overlord. I'm not sure why WCG lacks the balls to do anything about it. Oh well that's their problem as there are so many good projects in so many good places ... but MOT is stuck with me. biggrin

*****

*gasp* one more 9800GT wu valid and a mere 56,736 credits. biggrin MOT in the top 200 is inches away.

For someone whose volunteer commitment is at the local childrens hospital (or any hospital), there's a real chance that you'll have to deal with a real jackass of a doctor. If that defines your commitment, they win. We're here out of hope. Points/credits do tend to mean more to us than we prefer to admit in the context of why we crunch but they provide structure to our crunching. It gives us a means to recognize and encourge. It gives us a way to have form to our sense of accomplishment. It gives distance so far on the long path to success. Most recognize our diversity and humanity. For those that don't, they lose. I will crunch because of what I believe. For the jackasses, I celebrate their crunching for it has no less value than mine. That doesn't mean I have to celebrate them.

Edit: truth be told, there's at least a few folks out there that see me as a jackass too. Not like that's anything new either. biggrin
