I'm sure it will be a good book.. can't wait to hear your opinion on it too.. Dr. Mike.. The ironic part will come if someone asks me to review it. Reviewing one's academic mentor's debut book? Not academically advisable (FWIW Keith). I can tell you that the basic point Greg will make is, to quote Joss Whedon at the Humanist Lifetime Achievement Award, “The enemy of Humanism is not faith; the enemy of Humanism is hate, is fear, is ignorance, is the darker part of man that is in every Humanist and every person in the world.” Here's a link so you can hear the speech if you're interested. |

The boards are on fire this morning at GPUGrid, AQUA and MW about credits.
----------------------------------------![]() ![]() Does anyone else find this totally silly? What got me LMAO was almost every poster starts with, "I don't crunch for credits BUT ... and then they go on for three paragraphs about how they are being screwed. ![]() ![]() ![]() As more GPU projects roll, maybe it will force some kind of standard. I doubt it though. I'm sorry .... I have been having a laughter attack this morning. What does MOT think about points, credits and the current state of crunching? ![]() ![]() |

Is a 9800GT still worth getting? My C2D has a 9800GT right now and I'm thinking of getting one more matching one. It's $99 after $20 MIR, and comes with CoD4/5 (which I can sell).
I still haven't bought anything with that $120 I made from selling the 9800GTX. (was waiting for prices to go down). |

<snip> What does MOT think about points, credits and the current state of crunching? ![]() Points and credits are like the stats at a ball game (pick your sport). All that really matters is who wins or loses. In the grid computing universe, all that will really matter in the end is the results of all the WUs we crunch. If one of the BOINC sciences finds a cure for cancer - even just one kind of cancer - it will be worth the time and resources invested. Likewise, if SETI finds my people in a galaxy far, far away (or nearer) it will be worth it. ![]() Now, along the way it would be ideal if stats were kept perfectly uniformly, but it isn't going to happen without a centralized authority with some control (and we know what a mess that would be). Even at WCG where there is centralized authority, there variation between what the various projects grant per hour. Even with the same project, there's variation. Even on projects without WU redundancy, there's variation. The uncertainty principle rules more than just the subatomic world. But the nice shiny badges do give you a feeling that you've accomplished something. - D |

If that defines your commitment, they win. We're here out of hope. Points/credits do tend to mean more to us than we prefer to admit in the context of why we crunch but they provide structure to our crunching. It gives us a means to recognize and encourge. It gives us a way to have form to our sense of accomplishment. It gives distance so far on the long path to success. Most recognize our diversity and humanity. For those that don't, they lose. I will crunch because of what I believe. For the jackasses, I celebrate their crunching for it has no less value than mine. That doesn't mean I have to celebrate them. Edit: truth be told, there's at least a few folks out there that see me as a jackass too. Not like that's anything new either. ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by keithhenry at Jun 7, 2009 10:46:54 PM] |
