Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

Maicon over run the ball. It was a failed cross that went in because of bad goal keeping, not a wonder goal.
The jabulani balloon
Many people suggest this is the reason there have been so few goals; the ball is too difficult to control, and long range shots in particular change direction two or three times. This was clearly a problem for Brazil last night, as Brazil is normally a threat from range. Although using the jabulani means there is more chance of a mistake by the keeper, it also means most shots go wide or over the bar. Long passes are over hit, and the ball bounces too high, making it difficult for attackers to control the ball after receiving a pass, and gives the defenders more time to reach the attacker. If you watch it roll on the ground, it bobbles a lot. It looks like it was designed to remove skill from the game!
The German players are use to the ball as they used it in the Bundesliga this year, where most German players actually play their football. The jabulani was also used it in France and Argentina, but not as many of the French or Argentine World Cup line up play at home!

Finally, Spain and Chile get to play Switzerland and Honduras, respectively.

The jabulani balloon

You forgot the vuvuzelas. As the captain of team France said, those horns make such a loud noise, players can't hear each other. What comes to the goal of Maicon, I think it was from an angle the goalie expected him to be passing, not shooting thinking

Anyway, teams haven't been at their best (except Germany), but remember that the best games are still ahead!

cheers
Mika

Chile take a well deserved lead!

- Half Time: Chile 1, Honduras 0.
Chile is playing good attacking football. Pity about the Ref!

Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

Ahh, the Bee Swarm!
In the first 20min of the game, you could just make out the hint of rhythm; well more like synchronised car horns,
Beeeep---Beeeep---Beeeep...

- Well played Chile, 64% possession and good passing, applause but need to score a few more goals (9 shots off target)!
Chile - Switzerland (Mon 21st, 2nd game) might decide who goes through to the knock outs. I expect Chile will dominate that game, being so good at passing and moving, but the Swiss could be dangerous from set pieces.
Spain should win today and against Honduras, so they may rest players in the last game against Chile.

- Lots of fancy footy from Spain, but it was Route 1 that wone it. So much for resting players in the last game, Spain are in trouble. Three teams could finish on 6 points in this group, or a team could go through on 4 points!
