Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

Indeed, that was a very poor performance from England; most English players looked out of sorts and the only one that did not make a mistake was David James, fortunately for England. It looked like they were just not able to play their own game with that ball. England's best game is one touch football, pass and move at speed, but they just could not control the ball when they tried to play that way. When the ball moves randomly, then your skill counts for nothing, because you cannot predict its movement or control it. Algeria's close passing game and short dribbling seemed to work better, as was the case with Mexico against France. The faster you move the ball the more unpredictable it is, so long crosses go wayward and they are too difficult to control should they come your way. If England cannot adapt a new style of football they may fail to progress.

Nice thread.

As skgiven said a poor game. They need a stable ball for their "Kick and rush" style of play. It seemed they couldn't find each other.Bad passing even over short distances. But England still has a chance.

For me. I just hope Holland plays better than they did against Denmark. Where we needed a own-goal from the Danish to break open the game.

Good luck to all. smile

Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

England (Gerrard) normally likes to spead the ball about; 30 to 60 yeard passes, as is the case with Spain (Alonso). The problem is controlling it. The ball squirms around the ground when you want to cross it and when it arrives with the player it spits up or slithers away from them. It might be round but it is a bit like playing with a snake.

Veel geluk met de totale voetbalrechten.

Should World Cup Broadcasters Mute Vuvuzela Horns?

smile Although it can’t fix the World Cup’s officiating mistakes, a company called Audioanamix has devised a solution to another gripe dogging the tournament by silencing the buzzing drone of the vuvuzela horns commonly played by fans at African soccer matches. Audionamix is providing the drone relief to French pay television broadcaster Current+, and says it will do the same for any other broadcaster who wants it over the next month or so of World Cup matches.....

Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

Hi Jean Pierre,

Thanks!

You are right the USA had the 3 pointer stolen from them. Now they only have a total of 2 points. Those 2 missing points can turn out to be crucial for them. I hope they make it through tough.

As for the vuvuzelas here in Holland the NOS (our sports broadcaster) already muted them. After many complaints from the viewers.

Well I'm off to the pub. Going to watch Holland-Japan. (Hup Holland!! biggrin )

Btw I got the impression the referees are more strict in the 2nd round than they were in the first round. Could be me.

Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

Luck/ref might decide this game.
It's HT and 0-0 in a very dull game. Both sides have had 2 shots, all off target, in what I would describe as a scrappy match.
Although Holland had 69% 1st half possession, most of that was passing the ball about the back four, while Japan sat off, waiting for the Dutch to try to bring it into the midfield. This will be a very common tactic of the lesser teams; they know the long ball is not on, as it is too difficult to control, so they can flood the midfield and break up the play.
I saw lots of shirt pulling going on by both sides. In the first few games ANY shirt pulling got a Yellow card. Today it does not even get a foul. There was also a few hand balls that did not get a yellow. Inconsistency by the refs is really bad. You might not be surprised to learn that it's the same ref that allowed TH to handle the ball in the play offs. I'm shocked that FIFA actually took him after that catastrophe.
I hope the game picks up a bit in the second half.
- Well it did pick up, a bit. Mostly due to a goal from Snaijder, which was a bit lucky; it changed direction over the last few yards, and the goalkeeper almost missed it completely. Holland look better when the opposition try to play too. Ended Holland 1, Japan 0.
Looking forward to watching Ghana (soon). I expect Ghana will win.
-Wrong again, it ended 1-1. A good entertaining game, pity there were not more goals, there were enough good chances for 4-4!

On paper the Cameroon v Denmark game will be a stinker, but you never know, both teams need to win this one. If its a draw Holland are through no matter what happens in the last games.
