Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

Congrats to Chile for the 3 points, but...

IMHO, the decision, which team will reach the final round, is made more and more by the refs. I have never seen such a desolate performance from refs in such a short period. The red card against the suiss team was absolutely NOT justified, and the goal from Chile was definitely offside!!! Also, the penalty kick yesterday for Italy was more than disputable! Not to mention the "card player" from Spain from the game Serbia vs. Germany... He should play poker, there he can live out his addiction to cards!

And there are many more examples, all from this one tournament! This is not the way to promote soccer, and to provide great games.

My € 0,02...

Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

The Portugal v N Korea game was quite even in the first half. Not so much in the second d oh
Chile got a hard earned win today. Only the one goal, lets hope that is enough. Chile might still have to hold Spain to a draw after Spain won 2-0; if the Swiss beat Honduras in the last game, and Spain win, it would be a three way tie on 6 points. Spain need to win, unless the Swiss draw or lose.

Although tonights ref was good, I agree the refs have been poor at times. The Chile game should not have been a 9 yellow cards and a straight red game, and some of the free kicks were just wrong (nothing happened). Poor communication from the refs and inconsistency between games. You are right about the pen for Italy, too soft, and NZ's goal was offside too. If the ref in the Swiss/Chile game had been in charge of the last Germany game, there would have been about 5 players on the pitch, and that was an average game in terms of challenges. KaKa's red card? Not for me. The USA non goal says a lot. Cant imagine anyone would have been on the pitch at the end of that game if refed by those officials; the ref's whistle was competing with the vuvuzela. On that one single note, I will quote Xabi Alonso, who called for them to be banned before the WC,
"The horns make it hard for players to communicate and concentrate while adding nothing to the atmosphere".

Chile deserved to win, even if the goal was offside by 10mm or not smile I hope Chile do not have any big players suspended for the Spain game. Spain must win, Chile must not let them, just in case the Swiss win by a few goals - a game good enough to be a Quarter-Final.

Today is the day of the two tellies.

Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

It was offside!!! But it was not Gonzalez, it was Esteban Paredes, who stood offside, when the long pass to him was kicked. So the ref should have stopped the game in the second, he received that pass, before he moved the ball on to Gonzalez.

And it was not 10mm, it was clearly more than 1m...!!!
