Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

The Swiss just needed to win to qualify. What was considered as a sure thing against Honduras did not happen. Final score 0-0 and the Swiss are eliminated. They got many opportunities but were not able to score.
Again the only sure thing is that the ball is round and until the last second everything is always possible for both teams. wink
The other match in the same pool Spain-Chile was won by Spain 2-0. I followed in parallel the two matches last evening. In fact in our region we have a very large Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese communities, and there is also a sizeable chilean community.
Spain and Chile and Portugal did make it.
France, Italy were a true disaster.
I'll offer you a drink once you come to Switzerland. smile

Spain - Chile ended 2-1 and with Chile only having 10men for most of the game. The disaster was France getting to the finals wink
The Swiss dominated most of the game against Honduras but could not score. At the end Honduras missed several easy chances, mostly through greedy play; their strikers did not want to pass! Unlucky to beat Spain, get 4 points and go out. Better luck in the Euros (only 2 years)!

Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

Some numbers

Fron the ten top ranked teams there are seven left (out Italy no.5, France no.9, and Croatia no.10)

There are still
Seven American Teams: Uruguay, USA, Brasil, Chile, Argentina, Mexico and Paraguay

Six European teams: Netherlands, Slovakia, Germany, England, Spain and Portugal

Two Asia-Pacific teams: South Korea and japan

One African team: Ghana

I am still hoping to see Mexico in Quarter-Finals, we'll see tomorrow

Gil II, buena suerte en la noche.

There will be at least 3 teams from the Americas (possibly 4) in the Quarter Finals, and 3 Europeign teams.

Perhaps Europe will learn to play with something more spherical than a dodecahedron by then?
