Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

Mexico was the better team until that offside goal. And England got a goal stolen from them. I would have liked to see how the matches went if electronic aides were allowed. Many arbitrary errors in these 1/8 finals.

Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

The Mexico team changed after the referee's fault to see the offside which led to the first argentinian goal, the knew moments later that the mistake was re-played in the stadium screens, in that moment all including him were sure it was an error. even so, the goal was kept.

That completely sucks, just as Mexico's player Osorio, which gave the ball to the adversaries for the second goal in a TERRIBLE mistake.

These situations took their toll in the Mexico team's morale. the next 2 goals were real skill display... but too late for Mexico :(

Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

England lost because Germany was better, and made fewer mistakes. That said, England hit the post and the crossbar and had a goal disallowed! If the game had gone to 2-2 Germany would not have been able to sit back and play counter attacking football and England would not have attacked as much. The decision totally changed that game, and the Germany goals all came from silly mistakes. England and the ref made Germany look better than they are.

The same applies to the Mexico Argentina game. Firstly Tevez fouled the keeper and then he was offside. Mexico was playing a good system up until that point and was creating more chances. That one decision changed the way Mexico and Argentina could play the game. Argentina could relax more, commit fewer players forward and Mexico had to work much harder to try to get back into the game. In the end Argentina looked the better side, but that is because they were able to play counter attack football, as was the case with Germany.

In the end the officials stuck to the rule book. It kept them in a job but once again highlighted the unfairness of football.

Unfortunately in England and Mexico this tournament will be remembered for all the wrong reasons; an uncontrollable bouncy ball, the horrible noise, bad officiating and poor decision making by FIFA. Then there is Ireland!
Even two extra officials standing close to the goals would have spotted the Frank Lampards goal and the Tevez foul and offside. Football does not need stubborn dinosaurs at the top. It is inevitable that the Premiership in England will start to use goal mouth technology in the very near future. If UEFA do not accept this, then England will have to split. Even if it means not playing in Europe and Internationals. The public and media pressure to use cameras will overwhelm the FA.

Today we have two more good games to follow,
Holland – Slovakia, and then, Brazil - Chile.
I hope there will be no more controversial decisions to make, just good football.

Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

There is an eternal debate about to allow video cameras into the referees decision.
We could stay with the fundamental principle that arbitration is based on what the three referee do see on the playfield and that decisions are taken based on that, and only on that.
But todays technology allows for very fast video replay in slow motion and by multiple view angles, by an additional external referee that can by radio link talk to the game's main referee and give an opinion. Then the referee on the playground makes final decision.
Technology allows for that in matter of seconds and not minutes. So there is no disruption in play. And this external additional analysis would be given for major issues only and not for minor errors to keep the human error element related to a human arbitration to stay as an element of the fotball game.

The problem today is that this technology is fully available for all the people worldwide that follow the game. So except the referee who is not allowed to see what everybody else can see and this means that you, me we all become a kind of super referee.
We cannot avoid the technology so it must be used at best. And after all it is also a matter of justice.

That is the way we Mexicans are. Get up upset and we get very hot and... stop thinking. If Rafa Marques, el chicharito Hernadez and the boys have kept their cool after the offside.. we still could have won. But... that is the way we are.

Sob, instead of an Azzurri wave, there's a building orange wave of a different kind of plumage in the RSA

Gratz to the Team from Netherlands for their run into the quarter finals. I am living close to the dutch border and will be hopping over to the orange celebrations.
Good luck for the way to the final!

Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

Holland have won all their games. Although they have been rather ordinary, they have been at least as good as France and Italy were in the last world cup, and both got to the final!

So far Brazil have also looked rather average, by their standards. We will see soon enough what they have to offer the world cup.
