Re: FA@H Project Badge Recognition thread

Tom: Glad to see you will make it.

We instigated this a few projects back on our team and, although there are some who will find this an unsuitable use of the weak key, we found that it did more than get badges, it raised the team spirit and made our crunching interesting even exciting for a while which as a rule is not a feature of WCG.

On the subject of "just running 4 cores" you might like to look at this:
https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,38054
I consider that it offers a cheap to buy and certainly cheap to run proper x86 solution that will not grab great points but does the years and won't break the bank (probably)

My rigs will run out their caches then I will move them after work I expect

happy crunching

and..... Congratulations ERIC cool

Re: FA@H Project Badge Recognition thread

Hello.

From the latest update, for me at noon, I'm in Europe France hello world :), I'm on 9 years 288 days now.

So 365 - 288 = 77 days still needed.

I agree with OldChap, if next time people need help, to do it in a coordinated thread but we are in a forum, it is difficult after some messages, some pages, to keep track very precisely for everybody.

Is it possible to share a kind of sheet like Excel Microsoft, or Calc Libreoffice, I don't know how it works and if it is a good idea, but if I'm not wrong, you can open this on a webpage and only some people can modify the sheet and everybody can read it.

So you have the name, etc... exactly as OldChap (I always keep writing OldChamp and keeping correcting, haha) mentioned but in a sheet. When you look at a sheet, you immediately see who is here, who needs help, how many days needed, last time the guy gave information, etc... It is much more complicated in a forum to keep track of everybody, who is helping who, who is still needing help or close to finish. With a sheet, with just a glimpse, you have all information in front of you.

Just an idea.

As for myself, sorry not coming the week-end, but don't worry, I was every 12 hours looking at my stats. I guess I made a mistake to not keep you informed I was looking carefully at my stats and should have come sooner to post an update, to not worry cores donators. I fully agree.

Last thing about what SekeRob said. Yes the game here is not intented to get XX cores from others and show off "hey dudes, look at my 100 years on FAAH" and my family machine is just a Intel i860 - 4 cores, 4 logical cores. ;)

Myself I want my stats to reflect my real work with my machine. ME. But I was so angry to being mislead in january by looking at the chart stating there were more than 2 years of work and me, stop working on FAAH to get quietly my 5 years badge on MCM, thinking I had years ahead of me for FAAH, and discovering in horror some months later "next month it is finished guys", so I decided to ask for a help. This badge I should have get it, so I don't feel guilty to ask for a kick. ;)

Yee-Haw! There it is: My first diamond 20 biggrin

My Androids are now switched to OET to go for diamond 10 and the x86 stuff is set to MCM for hopefully completing diamond 20 before project ends.
Many Congrats Eric...

Re: FA@H Project Badge Recognition thread

@OldChap: Thanks :)

I achieved this 20 year badge on my own...did I really?
If you consider me/myself as personally owned hardware then I didn't.
Half of the cores crunching for me is hardware that I physically own at home. The rest is (temporary) rented.
A look at my monthly power bill reveals that for the same amount of money I could rent three of the i7-980x.
So is there really a difference between helping someone out and renting?
I think the community spirit is it worth to provide and accept help.

Just my 2 cents...

Re: FA@H Project Badge Recognition thread

I agree to a point with all the comments, from SekeRob and the 'I did it my self' to the community spirit comments etc.

However, we're all here to benefit the project and complete work units, does it really matter if it's on owned, borrowed or rented hardware as long as the person who is adding the devices to the grid is happy?

Yes, Qudos to those of us 'Do it them self' but is there really any harm in helping a fellow cruncher? Doesn't the phrase 'The end justify the means' fit here?

For those who's priority is badge hunting by any means, does it matter as the project gets the WU's returned, they just can't say 'I did it my self'

I own all but three of my devices, which are temp additions in the cloud, was more of an experiment than serious option. It proved owning is better value.

Just my bit...
