MrKermit hit 300 years today.... time flies when you've got 5000 cores! MrKermit, each member has it's own long term target. Mine is 100 years, but I suppose yours is 1000 years ![]() Btw, the 5000 cores are all physical cores? do you use HT. My goal is probably closer to zero... let me explain... Well, we definitely don't use HT. We have ~950 dual socket x quad core systems, and another 300 dual socket x dual core systems. So we're actually running nearly 9000 cores. The systems that are occasionally participating in wcg are: ~4500 cores (in quad core, 2.8Ghz nodes) + 500 cores (in dual core, 3.0Ghz nodes). The others are under longer term contracts for the moment. We're actively searching for anyone who has a use (and maybe even budget) for these resources. They're all high end with Infiniband, so they're capable of doing a lot more for fine grained MPI based research. Any time they spend on wcg is under-utilizing their talents, and I would think even some of the WCG projects may have some pieces of their research that are better suited for Clusters than Distributed Computing... and we could make that happen too. It's like having the Borg play tic-tac-toe all day. They'd be so much more entertained by Chess ![]() Ethically I feel obliged to keep them busy researching as much as possible, so the WCG has a bright future ahead unless we succeed at selling all their time?!? Doh! Cheers! MrKermit ![]() |

If everybody had the same ethical approach to problems the world would be a very different place indeed. ![]() I hope that your business perspective will improve. I do not know how long you can afford to pay the electricity bills for 5000 physical cores on a purely gift base. I hope at least that you get tax exemptions. But I know what it costs just for my 32 cores running 3.6 Ghz and 12 running at 4.0 Ghz at 24/7 and it is not cheap. ![]() |

Is the road getting hilly yet?
I'm finding it steep enough just outside 1K (1013), lots of traffic too ![]() |

Is the road getting hilly yet? Not yet skgiven. I still have ammunition. 1) The new 980X is replacing 920 and 950's. The 980X has doubled the score of the 920 (+100%). And does +50% compared to the 950. 2) A new dwarf planet ERIS (running a 950) will be added tomorrow. 3) I can also upgrade the memory with extremely fast DDR3 with agressive timings but this will be the last step when all the rest will be out of steam. I am comparing at the moment different memory speeds coupled with the 980X and see if there is a benefit. I run in parallel two 980X identically configured except for memory speed, and crunching the same mix. I will compare over a two week period and see if there is a visible difference. 4) I can improve my Triton88 CPU cooler by adding two additional 120mm fans (this will be 3x120mm fans on one CPU cooler) on each side and increase the airflow. The only thing I will not do is switch to watercooling to increase frequencies. I will stay with airccoling. To conclude all in all at the moment I do not feel any slowdown yet. I compensate. But my system is physically limited anyway, so there is a moment I will start to slow. I wonder when will that be? ![]() |

skgiven I see that you approach dangerously the invisible limit that will make you jump in a new dimension of the WCG cosmos.
----------------------------------------It is also called the 1000 limit. You will switch in an instant from the thousands dimension to the hundreds dimension. Are you prepared psychologically for that dimensional jump. Hope so. It can have devastating effects on your body and mind. Because at that instant you will suddenly discover that there is another possible dimension. But to reach that one you must go through another invisible limit called also 100 that will make you go from the hundreds dimension to the tens dimension. And then you slowly start to realize the distance to that limit. It is lightyears away. And when you finally understand the immense crunching effort needed to go there in that forbidden dimension, at that moment you must not be alone. Be with family and friends to have support, with large white towels to dry your watering eyes and cry together with you, and then give you enough energy to start all over again in this race to reach the dimensions of our world, I mean the three dimensional world. ![]() ![]() |
