Yesterday was a very long day. My appointment was to have been 2:45 PM, but the company that the VA contracts out to for transportation did not pick me up until 1:00 PM and then wandered around picking up 3 other VA patients so I got there at 3:00 PM. No problem, Podiatry at our VA is notoriously slow and I was not seen until about 4:00 PM anyway. After that, I had to pick up a prescription (the antibiotic that should address my infection -- third try). The Pharmacy was operating very efficiently for once and I got my prescription in about five minutes. So -- all was done for the day and I reported to the transportation people at 5:00 PM. Time just flew as I waited (yeah, if you believe that, I got a bridge to sell you). Finally, after several inquiries, I was assigned to a mini-van transporting only one other patient. He was being discharged from the VA and was being sent to a nursing home (for mental health reasons). Getting the right paper work for this took up quite a bit of time and the end result was I got home at 9:00 PM. As a result, my leg is really swollen and painful today.
I can't wait until next Monday. Appointments at 10 AM and 3 PM! Oh, good morning MOT ... ![]() |

Dave, for my knowledge.. what antibiotics did they have you on and what did they change you to? Dr. Mike.. ![]() Mike -- in the hospital, I was taking Vancomycin through an IV. I was sent home with Clindomycin HCL (3 150mg Cap, 4 times/day). Last week, that was then switched to Sulfamethoxazole 800/Trimeth (1 160mg Tab, twice/day). Finally, yesterday I was switched to Ciprofloxacin HCL (1 500mg Tab, twice/day). |

Hi Dave,
I am getting over a case of peritonitis (MRSA infection) after an operation back in late June. They took a culture, then gave me some levafloxacine (a more powerful version of cipro). After working on the culture, they changed me to straight vancomycin for a month. That surprised the nurse, who was used to at least one antibiotic in addition to vancomycin, but apparently I had a very garden-variety type of MRSA. I had a culture taken last Friday to see if I am cured. The final results are not due back until Friday. ![]() Lawrence |
