esoteric17 Because the thread should have merely been locked and edited, not removed completely. Note: I wouldn't want to be a mod again... EVER! As I didn't see it, I cannot say I agree or disagree with that decision. But my gut feeling is that whoever removed it thought it was so insulting that leaving it (even locked) continued the insults. A fact of forum life is that the good of the many outweigh the good of the few. Yes, those holding minority views have rights. That is where discretion comes into the picture, by both the poster and by the forum staff. Exactly what was said? What was implied? When was it said? Where (which thread) was it said? And the biggie: Why was it said? For every one member who complains, there are roughly fifteen who agree but don't bother complaining. That is always on the minds of the forum staff. Do not, for even one minute, think the staff take these matters lightly. The thing that one should keep in mind is that controversial does NOT EQUAL contentious. People can have sincere and heart-felt disagreements and debates without them becoming crude, rude, and socially unacceptable. You are right just roll over and play dead |

One would be amazed on how much this reduces misunderstandings. [example] You are right ... Thank you. ... just roll over and play dead I find this a bit harsh. What exactly prompted this reaction? Hi Gerald. It's nice to meet you.
I just feel that if you feel passionate about something you should put up a little fight fot it. I whole-heartedly agree. So when other members were maligned i would take upon myself to reciprocate... Good for you. I also am a defender of the underdog, sometimes on principle only. I don't get along well with bullies, hard-liners, those who *refuse* to think that others could even *possibly* have a point, narrow-mindedness, etc. ...often to extreme Ermmm... perchance is that the problem? I guess this is what i was referring to--if that were the case in every instance America would have never been as only about one third of the people wanted to implement the Constitution. I wasn't talking about the Constitution or the USA. I was talking about forums and specifically discretion. I'm guessing (since I didn't read it) for every post that was edited or deleted, if one tries hard enough, one could find a way to express the meaning without being hateful. Except if being hateful was the point. If posters were being hateful on purpose, then shame, shame. And not real smart. I've never heard of anyone having his or her opinion turned around by being treated hatefully. That approach causes people to harden their hearts, minds, behaviors, and attitudes. As much as we would like it if everyone agreed with us, that's not gonna happen. |

The hoax is global warming by humans Ah, I see... I disagree. But it won't matter in the long run, as the world is ending on December 21st, 2012. Mwwwaaaahaaaahaaaaaa! ![]() |

The hoax is global warming by humans Ah, I see... I disagree. But it won't matter in the long run, as the world is ending on December 21st, 2012. Mwwwaaaahaaaahaaaaaa! ![]() But the fact remains, the Mayan Doomsday Prophecy is purely based on a calendar which we believe hasn't been designed to calculate dates beyond 2012. Mayan archaeo-astronomers are even in debate as to whether the Long Count is designed to be reset to 0.0.0.0.0 after 13.0.0.0.0, or whether the calendar simply continues to 20.0.0.0.0 (approximately 8000 AD) and then reset. As Karl Kruszelnicki brilliantly writes: Between 31 December and 1 January since 1972, 15 assorted December 31 were followed by a leap second after 23:59:59 at 23:59:60 and before 00:00:00. To nudge the calendar further, 9 more leap seconds were added at the end of June 30."…when a calendar comes to the end of a cycle, it just rolls over into the next cycle. In our Western society, every year 31 December is followed, not by the End of the World, but by 1 January. So 13.0.0.0.0 in the Mayan calendar will be followed by 0.0.0.0.1 – or good-ol' 22 December 2012, with only a few shopping days left to Christmas." – Excerpt from Dr Karl's "Great Moments in Science". The "second wranglers" defined it based on the year 1900, and the earth has slowed down a smidge since then.
