A 5U bucket server! Max is only 16 cores (16 threads) but still a bit of a beast. What is the Max CPU it can take?
Let us know how the power works out. |

Keeping up with the newest tech without working in the field can get interesting at times. Exhausting I would think. ![]() Keeps me young I think. Got some bad news yesterday. My daughter called last night and my Ex's father keeled over during lunch and died of a heart attack. Just what you'd describe as a "good guy". Raised 7 kids, worked hard. Never a nasty word for anyone. 39 years in the National Guard and even though retired at the time showed up in uniform to go with "his kids" when they were deployed to Iraq back in 1991.. A big square shouldered cigar smoking guy who understood the word honor. The world is a lesser place without him. ![]() |

MM, you have my condolences.
Nickoli, 8 X $40 sounds ok. You might want to look at the price of the 890s. My concern is the PSU! 8X95 TDP + board + RAM + Drives + Fans. You will need a 1200W PSU, or perhaps two PSUs. Still, you could put together a 40GHz system for under $700. I hope you can get cheap heatsinks! |

On the 28th Feb Intel will launch the i7-930.
Hardly a realistic upgrade route for anyone with an i7-920 and I am not sure of the i-wisdom here either; sounds like the old flood the market with products strategy. The ES's are 45nm, so no change there. The only difference I can spot is that they are clocked at 2.8GHz (only slightly up from 2.66GHz). As it is still 45nm and 0.14GHz faster it is likely to keep its 130W TDP, but might be slightly better to OC. It should ship at the same price as the 920. PS. For anyone that does not already know, Intel have dropped the speculated i9 name, opting to keep it at i7 and use EE. It will be called i7 980X EE. Just rolls of the tongue! |
